1981 CITROËN 2CV CHARLESTON

KEY FACTS

  • A smart example of the appealing French classic, presented in good, usable condition and benefitting from a recent service.
  • Under the bonnet is the 602cc air-cooled flat-twin, rated at up to 28bhp, driving the front wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.
  • The odometer currently displays 88,928km, however this is not warranted.
  • First registered in March 1981, the car has had only three private keepers from new.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Introduced in September 1980, the 2CV Charleston was initially intended as a limited-edition version of the iconic people’s car, but proved to be so popular that it entered full-scale production in July 1981, after the first run of 8,000 cars sold out.
  • As with all early Charlestons, this example is finished in a two-tone burgundy and black colour scheme with sweeping white accent lines.
  • Inside, the seats have been retrimmed in light grey diamond-stitched cloth, and the car rides on the correct 15-inch steel wheels, which are finished in the same burgundy hue as the body and are fitted with a set of chromed hubcaps.

CONDITION

  • There is no known bodywork damage, however there is visible corrosion to the metalwork below the rear number plate.
  • The two-tone burgundy and black paintwork was resprayed approximately 10 years ago and is in good overall condition, though there are various small marks and blemishes around the car, commensurate with its age.
  • Furthermore, the rear bumper is dented and buckled, and the black finish which accents its centre is cracked and flaking.
  • Inside, the seats have been retrimmed and show some light signs of wear, while the rest of the cabin features a charming light ‘patina’, in line with the car’s 40 years of age.
  • There are no known electrical or mechanical faults with the vehicle.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This 2CV’s most recent routine maintenance was a general service, which was carried out in June 2021 and included replacement of the battery and a brake fluid change.
  • The current owner also states that the brakes have been overhauled.

SUMMARY

This Citroen 2CV Charleston is a solid example of the characterful French classic, presented in smart condition for its age. Previously repainted and described by its current owner as being in good mechanical health, this charming little Citroen would make a fun addition to any collection, and is bound to delight its next owner with its simplicity and rustic style.
