1980 FIAT X1/9

KEY FACTS

  • This Fiat X1/9 is a stylish Bertone-designed Italian sports car, benefitting from a previous mechanical overhaul and with low mileage from new.
  • It is powered by a mid-mounted 1.5-litre SOHC inline-four, producing around 84bhp and driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.
  • First registered in Germany in February 1980, this X1/9 was then exported to Spain in 2008, when it was acquired by the seller.
  • The car has been kept under a cover in a private garage during their ownership, and is only driven by the vendor in warm weather.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • This X1/9 was specified with bright red paintwork, tan leather upholstery with cloth bolsters, and a brown dashboard.
  • Notable features include the X1/9’s signature pop-up headlights and a removable targa roof panel.
  • The car rides on the correct set of 13-inch Cromodora alloy wheels, which are in good shape, though there is moderate pitting on their surfaces. Only two of the four original aluminum centre caps are present, and included as spare parts.
  • The cabin features a three-spoke Momo steering wheel, a more contemporary stereo head unit with Bluetooth connectivity, plus a spare wheel behind the passenger seat.
  • An electronic ignition system, a new battery and a secondary switch-operated engine cooling fan have also been installed.
  • The car’s original German owner’s manuals, service book and registration documents will be included, along with evidence of its Spanish registration, various inspection documents and a value report from La Estela Classics Club.
  • A jack and wheel wrench will also be supplied, along with some other spare parts, new and used, for various parts of the vehicle.

CONDITION

  • There is no known bodywork damage.
  • The car has only covered around 700km since a respray in 2010, and the vibrant red paintwork remains in excellent condition, with only a few small scratches around the headlights.
  • Inside, the tan leather upholstery is in good condition, though the vendor reports that there is a small hole in the driver’s door card.
  • A few small scratches can be seen on the dashboard plastics, and the vinyl-trimmed sun visors have a few small air bubbles.
  • The plastic edge of the engine cover latch is broken, but the damage is cosmetic, and it remains fully functional.
  • There are no known electrical or mechanical faults.
  • The car’s last roadworthiness inspection was conducted in August 2020, resulting in a pass with no warnings or recommendations.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This X1/9’s most recent service was carried out in August 2021 at 44,600 km, when the technicians at Automocion Anuarbe changed the engine oil and filters.
  • Previous routine services were performed in August of 2020 and 2019, when the front tyres were also changed.
  • Notably, the engine was rebuilt in 2011 and converted to use unleaded fuel. This included skimming of the cylinder head, re-cutting of the valve seats and replacement of the valves and valve guides.
  • Furthermore, the carburettor was fully rebuilt, the water pump, fuel pump and alternator were replaced, and the gearbox was completely overhauled.
  • The brake callipers have been stripped and restored with new gaskets, and new custom-made metal brake hoses have been fitted, as well as a new master cylinder, new brake discs and new pads.
  • A custom-made radiator has also been fitted, and a switchable cooling fan has been added.

SUMMARY

This Fiat X1/9 Bertone is a stylish modern classic sports car, which has been sympathetically refurbished to a high standard and is offered for sale with very low mileage from new. Now fitted with a few sensible upgrades, it would make a fun open-top companion for warm weather drives.
