1979 VOLKSWAGEN T2 CAMPERVAN

KEY FACTS

  • Originally converted from a ‘Kombi’ van by Devon Campers, this Type 2 has since been fitted with the pop-up Westfalia top.
  • Mounted at the rear is a 1600cc air-cooled flat-four petrol engine, producing up to 47bhp, driving the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.
  • In presentable cosmetic and mechanical condition, the attractive period colour scheme of white over yellow gives the van a particularly cheerful appearance.
  • In the current ownership, the van has been used to travel all across the UK, including to Lands’ End, Lizard Point, Ness Point and John o'Groats; the latter as part of it completing the North Coast 500 road trip.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • The interior is well-equipped with a kitchenette incorporating a Smev sink and triple-burner gas hob unit, veneered wooden storage units and yellow mosaic tiling to the counter tops, complemented by yellow gingham curtains.
  • The rock’n’roll bed functions as it should, as does the Westfalia pop top.
  • An Empi Trigger Shifter replaces the stock gear lever.
  • Aftermarket window winders and locking pins have replaced the original items, and there are also louvred opening windows above the kitchenette for better air flow.
  • A retro-styled aftermarket Bluetooth head unit feeds into uprated under-dash speakers.
  • Although there is no detailed service history, the vendor has maintained records and receipts during their three years of ownership.
  • An Empi hard start relay is fitted to eliminate hot start issues that can commonly occur on T2s.

CONDITION

  • There is a dent noted on the rear bumper, plus minor dints in a few other places commensurate with the vehicle’s age and use.
  • The condition of the paint is described as fair, and has evidently been repainted at least partially in the past. The overall appearance is presented, but there are obvious imperfections upon closer inspection, which are documented in the gallery.
  • Paint to the window frames and scissor mechanism of the pop top is flaked in places, and various body seals are slightly worn with age.
  • As with the exterior, the cabin is in fair order, with obvious wear to the front seats in particular. The mesh material to the sides of the pop top may also need attention in the near future. However, this is a well-equipped van with a professional period fit-out, which deserves the relatively modest investment to bring it back up to a very good standard.
  • There are no known electrical or mechanical faults.
  • Although MOT exempt, the most recent test was a first-time pass in April 2021; and though noted only as an advisory, a new rocket cover gasket was fitted to remedy a minor oil leak discovered during the inspection.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • Most recently serviced by the owner very recently at 58,285 miles, the engine oil was changed, oil filter cleaned, air filter replaced, and new rocker cover gaskets fitted.
  • The two prior services were also carried out by the current owner. July 2019 saw an engine oil change, oil filter clean, and new air filters fitted. In July 2018, the engine oil, oil filter, spark plugs, air filter, spark plug leads were all changed. A new fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel lines were also fitted, along with urethane gear couplers, brake shoes, brake shoe adjusters, rear brake hardware and slave cylinders, and a 5-litre brake fluid flush.
  • Other mechanical work completed in the vehicle’s current ownership includes a new fuel filler cap, fitment of historic plates, a new clutch cable, distributor cap, replacement rotor arm, new stainless steel tipped exhaust, carburettor rebuild and the addition of a hard start relay.
  • The rear jacking points have both been professionally replaced to remedy a failure on one side. This caused minor damage to the rear panel above which has since been repaired.

SUMMARY

Finished in a charming yellow and white colour scheme, this example of the eminently popular VW Type 2 Camper has been well looked after by its current owner over the last three years. While there are some obvious areas for cosmetic improvement or further customisation, this delightful Bay Window camper is in good mechanical order and ready to be enjoyed as-is.
