This 1979 Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 represents undisputedly the most desirable variant of the W116 generation – a benchmark of luxury limousines. It would be difficult to find a better classic saloon in which to tour the continent.
This SEL was first purchased by a Mannheim-based company in Germany on 20 March 1979, and its registration was noted as MA-RV 188. After over a decade of ownership, the Mercedes-Benz was then purchased by a Mr Knaier on 13 March 1990. Prior to purchase, Mr Knaier reached out to Mercedes-Benz Mannheim-Heidelberg to confirm the car’s specification.
As per the correspondence (with documentation available on file), the 6.9-litre V8 limousine was specified with hydro-pneumatic suspension, an anti-lock braking system, power steering and with Michelin XWX 215/70VR14 steel-belted radial tyres. The Dark Olive Velour (Velour Dunkeloliv – 976) interior featured a burl wood dashboard and centre console, air conditioning and cruise control. Also included were head rests and reading lights in the front, folding armrests, a luggage net and an alarm system. The saloon’s bodywork was finished in Thistle Green Metallic (Silberdistel M 881) and incoporated an electric sunroof and windows, fog lights, headlamp washers/wipers, and heat-insulating glass all around.
In March 2016, the car was purchased by its current Italian owner and exported out of Germany for the first time in its life. Under its current ownership, it was registered with the Automotoclub Storico Italiano (A.S.I.) on 11 May 2017.
This Mercedes-Benz shows minimal evidence of use both inside and out and has been well maintained over its lifetime, with no less than 12 German technical inspections noted in its German registration documentation, various Mercedes-Benz service records dating back to 1987, and numerous TÜV German inspections on file. The car’s paintwork looks smooth and even and its handsome interior unspoilt.
With just three owners from new, this beautiful Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 provides a rare opportunity to own one of the most sought-after classic high-performance saloons, which remains in superb condition.
