1979 HONDA CX500

This 1979 Honda CX500 is a very low-mileage example, which also boasts cherished single ownership from new. It is powered by the 496cc water-cooled V-twin engine, coupled to a five-speed transmission. The odometer currently indicates just 8,637 miles.

With its radical, short-wheelbase upright design, the CX500 had a noticeably different aesthetic to other V-twins of the era, and also boasted a water-cooled motor and pushrod-operated valves. First registered in April 1979, this CX500 has had just one owner from new.

The body and frame of this CX500 are in good shape, and the condition of its red finish has been described as excellent. The original livery is in superb order, and it retains all of the correct trims and badging. The chromed mud guard, forks, and mirrors are all in excellent condition, as is the polished exhaust and the Comstar wheels. The black seat upholstery presents very well, with no damage, and hand grips and gauges are similarly well preserved.

The last routine maintenance took place in February 2013 at 8,420 miles, when technicians at A&D Verity in St Ives also replaced the cam chain tensioner. Prior to this, technicians at the same garage serviced the vehicle in June 2011 at 6,732 miles, with the vendor noting that little more than basic oil services have needed to be carried out, in line with the low mileage

The most recent MOT test was on 12 May 2015 at 8,444 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories. It is now exempt from mandatory annual testing, as well as exempt from annual road tax. The wheels are wrapped with Metzeler tyres, which are reported to be in very good condition. Accompanying the bike are the original owner’s handbooks, the sales invoice, and a workshop manual.

This Honda CX500 is an outstanding one-owner example of the classic Japanese motorcycle, presented in excellent condition throughout and with a vibrant colour scheme. With genuine low mileage, this CX500 would be a great acquisition for a collector, but should also need very little to be put into regular service should the next owner so desire.
