1979 DUCATI 900 SUPER SPORT

KEY FACTS

• A rare and desirable classic motorbike, which underwent an extensive refurbishment in 2016/2017 and has been used sparingly since.

EQUIPMENT AND OPTIONS

• Its black and gold colour scheme was introduced in 1979 to appeal to the British market. This example was later painted red, but has been returned to its factory finish.
• Cast Campagnolo wheels.
• Now features an aftermarket aluminium Imola fuel tank and a two-into-one exhaust from Conti, though with a Ducati part number stamped on.
• Original maintenance manuals included, along with a raft of invoices and MOT certificates.
• Dual seat included (not restored)

CONDITION

• No known frame or body damage.
• Black and gold paintwork on body in excellent shape. Its frame paint was not renewed as part of the restoration, so this part has a few small stone chips and scuffs. The wheels were stripped and repainted as part of the refurbishment, and all chrome parts were refinished.
• A few age-related creases on the single seat, with the original material still in place, which was rejuvenated as part of the restoration process.
• The bike comes with a non-standard ignition switch, while the light and horn control switch is cracked, but everything is in good working order.
• The most recent MOT test was on 3 May 2018 at 23,536 miles, which was a first-time pass with no advisories or defects.

SERVICE HISTORY

• Its last scheduled maintenance was in April 2021 at 23,572 miles, where technicians at Breaking Point in Aberdeen tuned the carburettor, before resetting the ignition system’s pick-ups and performing a thorough check-over.
• Prior to this, in January 2018, Francie Duguid in Ballater rebuilt the carburettors, removed the heads to check the valve clearances, refurbished the front and rear brakes with new seals, and changed all of the fluids.
• A partial restoration was carried out through 2016 and 2017, where the carburettors were blasted, the engine casings were polished and many of the bike’s screws and fasteners were replaced with stainless items. The throttle assembly and cables were renewed, before the bike was resprayed and fitted with new brake calliper and fork seals.

SUMMARY

This Ducati 900 SS is an extensively refurbished example of the desirable classic motorcycle, with a smart black and gold colour scheme. Having been used sparingly since its restoration work, it remains in superb order, and is ready to be enjoyed as a charming B-road companion or to be put on display at any motorcycle meet or show.
