Fully rebuilt over a number of years, this 1978 Ford Escort RS2000 is a fine example of the classic performance car. Under the bonnet is the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder Pinto engine, which has been completely refurbished, and drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer now displays 78,395 miles from new.

First registered in April 1978, this RS2000 was acquired by the seller seven years ago from a customer of Rolling Road Services (RRS), having already been stripped down for restoration. It has been fully rebuilt over the course of the last six years into the impressive example it is today.

Free of any accident damage, this British icon’s bodywork is in great shape, with dent-free panels and even shut lines. Having been resprayed by the previous owner to Snow White (from black) during the car’s full restoration, the paintwork is described by the vendor as being in generally excellent condition, with only a few small blemishes – including a stone chip on the roof.

An original replacement bonnet panel was sourced, in matching white, which has some touched-in marks and paint cracks, commensurate with its age. The car rides on a pristine set of 13-inch four-spoke alloy wheels, which have been refurbished are finished in the original dove grey with polished rims.

Moving inside, this RS2000 is fitted with a pair of Recaro ‘fishnet’ front seats, which have been re-covered in black cloth and vinyl by the renowned Aldridge Trimming, and are now in excellent condition. The vendor notes that the car is still fitted with its original steering wheel, which has some minor wear to its leather covering; however, this to be expected given its age. Elsewhere, the interior trim presents very well, with a few minor marks and blemishes but no damage to speak of. While the clock is not operational, all of the other electrical items, buttons and switches work as they should.

Restored by Rolling Road Services (RRS) to original specifications over the course of the last six years, this RS2000’s mechanical components are in fine fettle. Its 2.0-litre Pinto engine was rebuilt and refreshed in 2020, when the cambelt was also replaced, and is now in excellent running order. Elsewhere, the gearbox, suspension and brake components were also tended to, and the only modifications to note are the car’s genuine K&N RS2000 air filter and a quick-shift mechanism for the original manual 4 speed transmission.

Its last MOT test was conducted on 11 November 2020 at 78,393 miles, which resulted in a clean, first-time pass. The wheels are fitted with Toyo Proxes CF2 tyres in size 185/60 R13, which are brand new.

A definitive 1970s performance car, the Mk2 Ford Escort RS2000 is a wonderful classic that benefits from significant recent expenditure. While the seller states that this restored example is not up to concours standards, it could easily be perfected should the next owner desire. However, the car presents very well today, with the recent mechanical restoration meaning that it can be enjoyed on the open road immediately, exploiting its rev-happy engine and nimble handling in full.
