• A fantastic example of the sleek Italian 2+2, presented in a handsome colour scheme and benefitting from cosmetic and mechanical restoration.
  • Under the engine cover is the car’s original 220hp 3.0-litre V6, which drives the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission.
  • The odometer displays just 13,680 miles, which is thought to be accurate.
  • Manufactured in September 1977, this US-market Merak is believed to have had only five keepers from new.

  • Identifiable by the horizontal grille on its bonnet, this Merak SS produces an additional 30hp compared to the standard car, thanks to an increased 9:1 compression ratio and three larger Weber 44DCNF carburettors. Its weight is also reduced by approximately 50kg, offering improved performance and greater agility.
  • As a US-market example, this example also features the Maserati Bora dashboard and conventional servo-assisted brakes and electric headlight motors, in place of the complex Citroën hydraulic system found in other markets.
  • The car will be accompanied by its Technical and Aesthetic Characteristics document and Certificate of Origin from Maserati Classiche, which were issued in February 2015. The seller is also supplying a number of invoices for the car’s maintenance and restoration.

  • No known bodywork damage.
  • Professionally resprayed in 2014 at a cost of $36,000, the paintwork is in excellent condition, with a smooth and glossy appearance around the car, and only minor stone chips on the gloss-black front chin spoiler and minor paint blisters at the back.
  • Inside, the seats have been re-trimmed in the correct blue leather and present very well indeed, though there are some small marks on the rear passenger seat. Elsewhere, the trim is believed to be entirely original, and has a charming light patina throughout.

  • This classic Italian sport car’s most recent maintenance was carried out in June 2017 at approximately 13,650 miles by Auto Sauer, Bamberg. As well as bleeding the clutch, they also overhauled the front passenger-side brake calliper and renewed the brake fluid, overhauled the right-hand cylinder head and repaired the exhaust system, at a total cost of just over €3,000.
  • Prior to this, in August 2014 at 13,614 miles the car was inspected and a number of small items were tended to, including the power windows, the horn and the headlights.
  • In 2012, US-specialist SM World fully overhauled the engine at approximately 12,000 miles. As well as a detailed inspection, this also included the fitment of an upgraded stainless steel timing chain and replacement of the original sodium-filled valves with uprated items.
  • As it has not been driven much in recent years, the seller recommends that the car’s next owner has it thoroughly serviced prior to any long journeys.

Presented in superb condition and believed to have covered only 13,680 miles from new, this US-market Maserati Merak SS is a wonderful example of the stylish Giugiaro-designed 2+2 sports car. While it would benefit from a service and inspection due to sparing use in recent years, this elegant cruiser should then be ready to drive and enjoy on longer road trips, and will make a fantastic addition to any collection of Italian exotics.
