1977 FERRARI 308 GTB LM EVOCATION

KEY FACTS

• Thought to be the first steel-bodied, dry-sump 308 GTB, it has more recently undergone a conversion to race/rally specification.

EQUIPMENT AND OPTIONS

• It features a front bumper and grille conversion, with a wider bodykit and a set of PLS wheels, wrapped with Pirelli P Zero Asimmetrico tyres.
• Underneath, it features Intrax adjustable suspension, a four-tip sports exhaust and revised brakes, while the chassis has been cleaned and fitted with an aluminium protection plate.
• Inside, it has two LTEC bucket seats with Sabelt four-point harnesses and a custom three-spoke racing steering wheel; while the carpets, centre console, spare wheel tub and air conditioning systems have been removed, saving around 80kg.

CONDITION

• No known bodywork damage.
• Its Rosso Corsa paintwork and racing livery are in good shape, though with a few indicated blemishes, such as a scratch on the rear end, a scuff to the roof and some age-related blemishes to the front wings.
• The red LTEC bucket seats are in good condition, with just some slight discolouration.
• The wiring is neatly arranged, and the surrounding re-trimmed dashboard upholstery is free of any notable scuffs.
• A new fuse box has been installed, and there are no electrical faults.

SERVICE HISTORY

• Its most recent scheduled maintenance was in November 2020 at 69,000 km, where technicians at Classic Division replaced the engine oil, filters, brake fluid, spark plugs, belts and tensioners, fuel lines and gaskets.
• The ignition distributor was refurbished with new points and bearings, new ignition leads and extensions were installed, and new velocity stacks were fitted along with revisions to the carburettors.
• The cam covers and belt covers were finished in red ‘crackle’ paint, and various components were zinc-plated.
• It was also fitted with a new high-performance cooling fan, new battery, washer bag and wiper blades.
• The brakes and suspension bushings were overhauled some time ago by the previous owner.

SUMMARY

This Ferrari 308 GTB is a fantastic homage to the GTB LM as raced by Maurice Dantinne in period. Chassis number registries online indicate that 20805 was also the first steel-bodied, dry-sump 308, so it also boasts interesting early provenance marking the shift from the ‘Vetroresina’ bodywork. It now presents very well throughout, with a comprehensive motorsport-style conversion, overhauled engine, revised suspension and a stripped out interior. It would make a competitive rally, hill climb, or sprint event entrant, or would also be suitable for use as a fast road car.
