1976 PORSCHE 911S 2.7

This Porsche 911 S is a good example of the first ‘impact bumper’ generation 911, benefiting from recent partial restoration. Under the rear deck lid is a naturally aspirated 2.7-litre flat-six producing around 170bhp, driving the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. The odometer reads 91,911 miles.

Originally delivered new to Joliet, Illinois, as a US-market example, this left-hand drive example has been in the ownership of the current vendor since May 2020. The vendor believes the car was in storage between 1998 and 2011 in the USA, and it was imported into the UK in 2016.

A matching-numbers example, as a 1976 model year 911 it also benefits from a factory galvanised body. The vendor states that a matching recreation 911 RS ‘ducktail’ spoiler will also be supplied with the car, finished in the same Guards Red finish and with the correct RS badging.

This 911’s Guards Red paintwork is in good condition, having been repainted as a colour change from the factory black hue, prior to the vendor’s ownership. Minor blemishes are visible on the top of the front bumper and offside front wing, as well as the sunroof and engine deck lid. However, this remains a smartly presented modern classic.

The teardrop-shaped lines of the 911 have aged well, with even shut lines throughout. There are a handful of marks visible to the front bumper, as well as the rubber seals seen around the car, but nothing untoward for a vehicle of its age. During the partial restoration process, the outer side sills were replaced as well as their end plates, ensuring that the chassis was now in good order.

Riding on the original 15-inch Fuchs alloy wheels, these are in superb condition thanks to recent refurbishment, with the wheel centres painted black to match the ‘petal’ spokes.

Inside, the 911’s retro interior has a charming patina. The Cinnamon leather shows signs of usage, with a small detached area visible on the driver’s seat. An aftermarket Momo steering wheel has been added, with this and the gear knob remaining in great shape. The original carpets have also been retained, with the driver’s door card requiring a handful of clips to fully reaffix it.

Fitted with options including an electric sunroof, driver’s electric mirror and rear heated window, the vendor notes that these accessories remain operational. The heating system does however require attention in order for it to blow hot air, while the fog lights are currently inoperative. The vendor also notes that the driver’s mirror adjustment is working, but it is very slow to function.

The most recent service was carried out on 25 January 2021 by CarCare at 91,899 miles. This included detailed inspection of the braking system, including new brake fluid. The discs and pads were found to be in good condition. Prior to this, the engine oil and filter was changed by Automaster of Devon in May 2016 at 90,952 miles. Right-hand drive specification headlights were also fitted at this time.

The most recent MOT test was on 1 February 2021 at 91,910 miles. This was a pass, with advisories for both rear anti-roll bar bushes, following an earlier fail in which several remedial works were carried out for brake efficiency, lighting and exhaust emissions.

Wearing matched Nankang tyres all round, these remain in good order with approximately 7.5mm of tread remaining. Included for sale with the car will be an A4 folder packed with historical invoices and a Porsche service booklet, as well as two sets of keys.

This Porsche 911 S 2.7 offers a purist driving experience, unfettered by modern distractions. With recent recommissioning works completed, it is reported to be ready to use as intended, as a ‘high days and holidays’ car, or even for much longer touring road trips.
