1976 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.0 TARGA

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 Targa is a stunning classic sports car, presented in a handsome and period-perfect colour scheme, and benefiting from high-quality refurbishment. Under the engine lid is the numbers-matching 3.0-litre flat-six, producing around 200bhp and 188lb-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 194,377km.

A 1976 model year car, this 911 was among the first of the G/H/I series cars to have its entire shell treated with a full hot dip galvanising process. The Carrera 3.0 engine was a naturally aspirated version of the tried-and-tested 930 Turbo motor with K-Jetronic fuel injection, and the model featured wider rear wheel arches and improved heat management.

In production for just two years, it is understood just 1,123 Targas were built, making this a very rare variant of the 911. This is an original Australian market ‘tourist delivery’ car, first registered in May 1976 to an owner in Sydney, and it has been with the current owner for the last three years.

The bodywork is in excellent condition, with flush shut lines. Its metallic silver paint still looks fresh after a full respray, with a smooth and glossy finish all around the car, and with the vendor noting only a small chip in the front air vent, and a minor scuff on the passenger-side rear guard. The body trims all appear to be correct, including the black window surrounds, and it rides on a set of 15-inch Fuchs alloy wheels, with satin black centres and polished rims.

Inside, the 911 benefits from an extensive re-trim, comprising of cork-coloured tan leatherette with period-correct plaid cloth centre panels. All of the seat upholstery is in superb condition, as are the door panels and the dashboard. The carpets are also in good order, and the rest of the interior trim remains in its original specification, including the correct steering wheel and gear shifter. The vendor notes that the passenger-side front quarter window is currently missing so will need to be sourced and fitted, and there is also a cracked section in the passenger-side door release catch. The electrics all work as they should, and there are no warning lights.

The last maintenance was in June 2020 at approximately 193,000km, carried out by Michael Newton Automotive. This comprised a general service, as well as installation of a new fuel tank, and adjustment of the fuel system. The vendor notes that the most recent road safety check was around two months ago for registration, and there were no issues reported. Its wheels are fitted with matching Maxxis tyres, which are in as-new condition with plenty of tread.

Accompanying the car is the original document wallet, plus the stamped guarantee and service booklet, and the period service directory. There is also a very good history file, plus the space-saver spare wheel, and the original air compressor.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 Targa benefits from an extensive refurbishment, but it remains a highly original car in terms of its specification, and has not been subject to any modifications. With a superb colour scheme, this desirable 1970s classic would make a head-turning weekend cruiser, and would be a credit to any collection of sports cars of Porsche models.
