1975 VOLKSWAGEN T1 KOMBI SPLITSCREEN

This Volkswagen T1 Kombi Splitscreen represents an accessible route into classic ‘split window’ VW bus ownership, with a number of significant jobs already carried out. It is presented as a rolling chassis and shell with no electrics or running gear, and is a solid basis for a project to take on in 2021. It is being offered by the current owner at No Reserve.

The Brazilian factory was still building the T1 shape in 1975, so this represents one of the last of its kind. It rolled off the production line in left-hand drive, but has since been converted to have the dashboard and pedal section on the right of the cabin.

As well as the conversion, this Kombi has also been fitted with some new sections of metal for the floor pan, various chassis repairs, and has also received a conversion to rear independent suspension - as can be seen from the newer components and bolts visible underneath the van in the photo gallery.

While it is evidently not road registered, the VW has been put through the UK government’s NOVA import process, and is logged as a ‘taxes paid’ vehicle with a NOVA reference, so is ready to be registered with the DVLA once the project is completed and the vehicle is roadworthy.

There is some obvious oxidisation and surface corrosion around the shell, but it is believed to be a generally solid Kombi that should be a straightforward project for a knowledgeable enthusiast or of course to be sent away to a dedicated specialist. The body has been resprayed by the previous owner – a restoration garage that went into liquidation – which had intended to complete the van in the ‘rat’ style with intentional patina effects. The van comes with left and right side salvaged top front door sections ready to be bolted in place, as the originals had deteriorated. Both sets will come with the van.

This VW T1 Kombi Splitscreen is a superb ‘blank canvas’ for a budding restorer to take on and turn into the classic bus that they have always wanted. Whether you fancy creating a well-equipped camper, a retro-style catering van, or even taking the Kombi back to a passenger-focused factory specification, this is a great way into genuine Splitscreen ownership, ready to be united with the running gear and interior of the next owner’s choice.

Please note: as this is a rolling chassis and shell, it will of course require a trailer or other transporter to collect and move.
