KEY FACTS
- An incredibly rare classic racer, originally owned by Roger Penske and driven in period by Emerson Fittipaldi, before being restored to its original specification in 2010.
- Under the hood sits its correct 911/75, 3.0-liter ”high-butterfly” flat-six racing engine which drives the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.
- Initially sold for participation in the first 1974 IROC season, the car was first raced by Formula 1 Champion Emerson Fittipaldi, who subsequently piloted it to qualify in pole position for the first IROC race at Riverside in October 1973.
- This storied 911 has full ownership records and was originally brought into the US and owned by Roger Penske, then sold to John Tunstall who raced it in many IMSA races including the 24 Hr of Daytona and the Sebring 12 Hr.
- Tunstall later sold it to the infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar who raced it in Colombia with 935 bodywork. The car then returned to the USA in the early 1990’s and was converted back to its original bodywork.
- In 2011, it debuted at the Rennsport Reunion IV at Laguna Seca, and has since won a multitude of coveted awards.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES
- In total, only 15 IROC RSRs were produced for the 1974 model year, being fashioned after the then-new ‘short hood’ 911 and fitted with a unique rear decklid.
- This example has been refinished in its original hue of Sahara Beige, punctuated by the appropriate manufacturer and sponsor decals.
- Additional unique touches of the 1974 IROC cars include the sizeable rear spoiler, matte black headlamp covers, quick-release bonnet catches and external fire extinguisher switch.
- Inside, the stripped-out cabin is home to a pair of supportive bucket seats with period-appropriate Repa harnesses.
- As with every IROC RSR, it rides on a set of wide five-lug Fuchs alloy wheels.
CONDITION
- There is no known bodywork damage and no evident panel damage or rust.
- The paintwork is in great shape with minimal scuffs and scratches, having been fully restored in 2010.
- Inside, the black race-spec interior is in excellent condition with a very light age-related ‘patina’ on some of the interior trim items, but no evidence of wear on the seats or other touchpoints.
SERVICE HISTORY
- In 2007 this extremely rare RSR 3.0 was sent for a complete restoration and was returned to its original 1974 IROC specifications. Much of the work was done by RennGruppe Motorsports in Lexington, North Carolina.
- In 2010 the car’s restoration was complete, and it went on to claim several concours awards.
SUMMARY
This 1974 Porsche 911 RSR IROC is a truly unique classic racer, accompanied by a storied ownership history and presented in excellent, fully restored condition. One of only 15 examples built and raced in period by none other than Emerson Fittipaldi, it would make a superb centerpiece in any Porsche collector’s stable, and should be eligible for any number of historic races with a few minor safety-related updates.
