1974 PEUGEOT 404 RAT ROD

This Peugeot 404 Pick-up has been transformed from a classic with 1970s Gallic charm to a ‘rat rod’ style modified truck that would make a great promotional vehicle. Under the bonnet is a 1.9-litre inline-four diesel engine, producing around 63bhp, coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 80,646 km.

Understood to have been first registered in February 1974 in France, this left-hand-drive 404 Pick-up was imported to the UK in 2018, and was re-registered on these shores in June that year. There is one previous UK keeper on the log book, and the current owner acquired the car one year ago.

While the car arrived in the UK finished in white, it has since received some welding repairs to the floors, and has been painted roughly in a variety of orange and brown hues to resemble a weathered surface rust appearance in the classic ‘rat rod’ style. Its paintwork is described as being in fair condition, and as can be seen from the close-up photos in the gallery, the finish is purposefully shabby. The large wood barrels are also recent additions, meaning this could be particularly well-suited to promotional activity for a whisky or beer-related business.

Inside, the vibrant trim stands in deliberate contrast to the worn-look exterior. The bench seat has been re-trimmed in red, along with the door cards, while the steering wheel has also been painted in bright red. There are fabric door pulls, manual winding windows, and a column shift for the manual transmission. While the dashboard has been stripped back and given the weathered treatment, the upholstery is in great shape, with the vendor noting only a slight mark by the nearside door handle.

There is no service history with the car, though the vendor is not aware of any faults, and reports that it runs and drives well. The tyres are all reported to have a good level of tread remaining. It has not been subject to an MOT test since arriving in the UK, and is exempt on the basis of age.

This Peugeot 404 Pick-up is a fun custom truck that has received a ‘rat rod’ style makeover. It should prove to be a great value purchase as an attention-grabbing promotional vehicle for a small business, or could simply be enjoyed as a head-turning classic on the road, or at local and national shows.
