1974 ALFA ROMEO MONTREAL

KEY FACTS

  • This 1974 Alfa Romeo Montreal has been prepared for tarmac rally competition and presents beautifully.
  • Under the hood is a 2.6-litre V8 mated to a five speed ZF manual transmission.
  • The Montreal is a rare breed, with fewer than 4,000 built and only around 180 of these in right-hand drive.
  • Cared for by a single knowledgeable and passionate owner for the past 18 years, and boasting notable competition success.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Prepared as a tarmac rally car, the interior has been stripped to reduce weight and remove flammable surfaces.
  • The engine and gearbox are standard outside of an electric water pump and controller that were installed in 2002, when the engine was opened for a minor freshen-up that included a valve grind, and new rings, bearings and seals.
  • An extra cooling fan was installed in 1998.
  • The rear axle ratio was changed in pursuit of performance, and the original differential centre will be included in the sale.
  • Upgraded suspension was installed in 1988 including polyurethane bushes, nylon or rose joints as required, higher rate springs and fully adjustable MCA Suspension shock absorbers with remote canisters.
  • It is fitted with a competition roll cage and seats, with the seat mountings modified to accommodate a six-foot three-inch driver wearing a helmet with comfortable clearance
  • Sold with a Certificato Di Origine from Alfa Romeo Classique as well as a CAMS logbook from 1997, recording the ten major events the car contested.
  • Receipts for work done since 2003 are also included, along with many photos of the car in action, video footage from the Classic Adelaide Rally and the standard jack.

CONDITION

  • Having had no known accident damage or rust repairs, the chassis and bodywork are reported to be in great shape.
  • The Montreal benefits from a recent bare-metal respray inside and out, and it has done little mileage since. The red (AR130) finish is in excellent condition.
  • As mentioned above, the car was prepared for tarmac rally competition and features a functional but utilitarian interior to suit. As is shown in the photographs, everything is neat and tidy and has been well prepared and cared for.
  • All electronics are operational, but many are not original.
  • The car is on Queensland concessional club registration, and passed its last technical inspection in 2003 without warning or advisory.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • Last serviced by Avanti Spares in Northgate, Brisbane; the work included renewal of all fluids, spark plugs and filters.
  • The Alfa has only received sparing use in recent years and has been treated to regular minor maintenance to keep it in good working order.
  • More notable work in this period includes clutch hydraulics, rear suspension bush lubrication, and shock absorber maintenance.
  • Since retiring from competition use, it has been used as a fun weekend car, and the seller reports that it has been ‘over serviced’ considering the low mileage.

COMPETITION HISTORY

  • The car was used in competition from 1997 until 2005, entering 13 events in total and finishing every one. It was then retired as it was felt too rare to risk any damage.
