1974 ALFA ROMEO 2000 GTV - BARN FIND

This Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV is a genuine ‘barn find’ example of a desirable 105 Series coupé model, in a neglected but restorable state. With a recent resurgence in popularity, perhaps in no small part due to the creation of GT Junior and GTV-based resto-mods, the 105 Series has found new fans across the generations. This example from 1974 has the 2.0-litre all-alloy inline-four engine and a five-speed manual transmission to drive the rear wheels. The odometer shows 79,392 miles, which is thought to be correct.

The current owner has not driven or performed any maintenance on it since its purchase two years ago. The car appears to be largely complete, original and unmodified – both mechanically and cosmetically. Its rear bumper is no longer attached, with only the left hand over-rider remaining on the car and sitting askew, and with some other sections placed in the boot.

Obviously, there is rust present on all panels and parts of the visible underlying structure; some of which is relatively superficial, while in other places it has gone through the metal. Panel gaps and fitment appear generally consistent, with Bertone’s expertly styled crease lines flowing elegantly from nose-to-tail. The paint, which is possibly original, is evidently in a very poor state. Most panels are largely straight and free of dents, though a small dent on the left rear corner hints at the possible reason behind the rear bumper’s removal.

All glazing is present and intact, and the front and rear lenses present well for a 46-year-old car; however, the front side indicator units are missing. Apart from the rear bumper, all external brightwork and rubber trim also appear to be present on the body and in fair condition for its age, with pitting and bubbling in some parts. The tyres, given their age and condition, are not roadworthy, and while the 14-inch steel wheels appear original, they are missing their domed hubcaps.

Inside, things are just as original but equally crying for attention. The only minor modifications of note are an aftermarket radio mounted in the dashboard (with signs of where a larger faceplate once sat) and an added wood trim on the centre console behind the gear lever. There are major tears and seam splits in the rear seats and on the driver’s seat bolsters. The driver’s side door card has also lost some trimmings. All carpeting appears to be in fair condition throughout, and there is staining on the headlining. The steering wheel has fared best of all, but still has a crack at the rim’s 11 o’clock position.

No service documentation or history is included or known, though both the engine and gearbox are believed to be original, and there are keys provided.

This vehicle presents an intriguing opportunity as a neglected but largely complete basis for a total ground-up restoration. It deserves to find a home with a new owner who will treat it as a labour of love – either fastidiously refurbishing it back to Concours d’Elegance contender standards, or perhaps giving it a resto-mod treatment. It may even be possible to retain some of the rust and patina and reimagine this 2000 GTV as something of a ‘rat rod’. Whichever approach the buyer chooses, it is sure to be an enjoyable process watching the reincarnation of this charming and sought-after Alfa Romeo.
