1973 ROLLS-ROYCE SILVER SHADOW

This 1973 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow is a beautiful example of the classic luxury saloon, presented with an eye-catching Regency Bronze finish and in very good condition throughout. Under the bonnet sits a smooth the 6.75-litre V8, coupled to the Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission. The odometer currently indicates 70,768 miles, supported by MOT certificates dating back to 1978.

The Silver Shadow offered more interior space than its predecessor, the Silver Cloud, despite a shorter wheelbase and a narrower body. It also featured disc brakes all round, with dual-circuit braking and hydraulic self-levelling suspension. First registered in June 1973, this example has been in single family ownership from new, being handed down by the first owner to his son-in-law.

The elegant bodywork of this Silver Shadow is all in good shape and the condition of its Regency Bronze paintwork has been described as very good overall, presenting with just a few minor blemishes. The vendor has indicated that a small area of paint is beginning to lift on the leading edge of the bonnet, while a chip can be seen on top of the offside front wing, along with a small bubble on the leading edge of the nearside rear wheel arch. The Spirit of Ecstasy is gilt plated, while the distinctive ‘Pantheon’ grille and chrome body trims are all in good condition.

Inside, the car retains its original Magnolia leather trim, which now has an attractive patina. The bolsters come with some light creasing and the leather-clad door cards have some slight discolouration. Its carpets are in excellent condition, having been protected by lambswool mats. The walnut veneers also present very well, along with the Rolls-Royce Corniche style wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, while the cabin also features an original Webasto full-length sliding sunroof. The vendor notes one of the driver’s door mounted electric window switches works intermittently, but there are no other known electrical foibles.

The last routine maintenance was undertaken in July 2020 by Premier Auto Care in Edgware, Middlesex, which fitted a new steering box, lower steering column input shaft assembly, overhauled starter motor, choke unit, adaptor, stove pipes, spark plugs and HT leads. In June 2014, technicians carried out a 6,000 mile service, before removing the radiator and replacing its core. In September 2013, technicians carried out a 12-month service and re-gassed the air conditioning, while in April 2010, a minor service was undertaken.

The most recent MOT test was on 10 July 2020 at 70,684 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories or defects. The front wheels were fitted with Avon Turbosteel tyres in 2016, which are now reported to have 8mm of tread remaining. The age of the rears is unknown, though they both have around 7mm of tread remaining.

Accompanying the vehicle are the original owner’s handbook, service booklet, and MOT certificates dating back to 1978, alongside a raft of operating instruction manuals, leaflets and maintenance invoices.
