1973 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 2.7 RS TOURING

This Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS is an excellent example of one of the most celebrated and coveted classic sport cars from Stuttgart, which has a well-documented history. Under the engine lid is the original numbers-matching 2.7-litre air-cooled flat-six, producing around 210bhp, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 135,863 miles from new.

Understood to be one of just 93 genuine UK right-hand-drive examples built, it was completed in February 1973 and was first registered a month later. The log book shows nine previous keepers, and the substantial history file details the ownership right back to its original delivery. One of its previous owners was the late Richard Colton, a well-known collector who bequeathed a Ferrari 250 GT SWB and a 275 GTB/4 to the RNLI in 2015. Having been cherished and enjoyed throughout its life, it is now offered by the trade to another enthusiast.

This car left the factory finished in Grand Prix White, embellished with blue lettering along the flanks, as well as the optional blue painted alloy wheel centres. The interior was trimmed in black leatherette, and it is also equipped with the heated rear screen, Recaro sport seats, and electric windows. While it is common to see a sunroof on the Carrera 2.7 RS, this is one of the minority of UK cars specified without one.

The bodywork of this RS is in great shape, with impressive shut lines and panels gaps all around the car. Its Grand Prix White finish was completely renewed by RS Panels in 1998, and it has had remedial body improvements and some fresh paint in more recent years as well. There are some imperfections in the paintwork, commensurate with being driven and enjoyed as intended, but as the photos show, this is a smart example that presents very well indeed.

All of the light lenses are in good order, as are the metal bezels around the headlights, and the single door mirror. The door shuts, bonnet and boot shuts also present well, with only minor blemishes like the rest of the body. It rides on the correct 15-inch Fuchs alloy wheels, which are in great shape, with unmarked metal rims, bright blue paint on the centre petals, and black wheel bolts.

In the cabin, the front seats are upholstered with corduroy style centre panels, and are in superb condition with no damage and virtually no wear to speak of. There is a record in the file of the seats being re-trimmed in 1992. The rear seats are also in good order, folding flat to create more luggage space if needed. Its dashboard and switchgear appear to be original, and ahead of the driver is a full complement of VDO dials that all work perfectly. The headlining was renewed in 1998 by coachtrimmer Suffolk and Turley - around the same time that the car was repainted - and it still looks very smart today, with no damage or sagging. In 2009, Autofarm fitted a replacement set of carpets throughout.

Mechanically, this Carrera 2.7 RS is in excellent condition, having been well-maintained over the years by the likes of Maltin Porsche, Autofarm, and Maxted-Page and Prill. Within the last decade, the car has covered less than 6,000 miles, and has benefited from a full suspension overhaul and gearbox rebuild during this period. It has just received a full service from recognised specialist Tuthill Porsche in Oxfordshire, where the car can also be viewed.

The most recent MOT test was on 4 June 2019 at 135,863 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories whatsoever. Because of the six-month extension, the next annual test is not due until 7 December 2020. Its wheels are shod in a full set of Pirelli P6000 tyres, in size 195/65 R15 at the front and 215/60 R15 at the rear, which are date-coded to 2009 and remain in good condition with plenty of tread.

Accompanying this 911 is an absolutely superb history file, containing detailed records of previous owners dating right back to 1973. An original driver’s manual and Carrera RS supplement is also included. There is an extensive amount of paperwork pertaining to minor and major maintenance throughout the car’s life, and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity is also present. There are three keys, a full-size spare wheel, and a tool kit.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS is a wonderful example of one of the most desirable collector cars, and a genuine icon among 1970s classics. While more than 1,500 were built, this is an exceptionally rare and original right-hand-drive car, which remains in its factory colour scheme. It is a terrific driver’s car, with exciting performance and handling, while being comfortable enough to use for longer road trips. Presented in impressive condition throughout, and well known within the Porsche community, this Carrera RS would be a credit to any collection.

All cars and motorbikes on Collecting Cars are run through an online HPI check. This vehicle shows no insurance database markers for damage or theft, and has no finance owing.
