1973 PORSCHE 911 2.4 S TARGA

This 1973 Porsche 911 2.4 S Targa is a fantastic open-top classic sports car, presented in impressive overall condition and benefitting from a recent engine rebuild. It is powered by the original numbers-matching 2.4-litre air-cooled flat-six, which now produces 199bhp and is driven through a five-speed ‘915’ manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 68,129 km.

Bettered only by the motorsport-focused 911 2.7 RS in terms of its performance in period, the 2.4-litre Porsche 911 S is now a particularly sought-after model from the marque’s illustrious back catalogue. First registered in 1973, this example has had only three keepers in its 48-year history, and it is now offered for sale by its owner of the last 20 years.

Today, this car’s iconic bodywork presents very well, with even flush lines and no evidence of any prior accident damage, though there is a very slight dent on the bonnet and another on the right-hand rear wheel arch. Believed to have been resprayed from its original hue of Sepia Brown to Light Ivory in the 1990s, the paint is in good condition, with only a few minor marks – including two small symmetrical blisters between the windscreen and the bonnet (possibly made during assembly of the bonnet), and a small chip on the bottom edge of the rear hatch.

The trim, including the polished headlight bezels and windscreen surround is in very good order, as is the brushed alloy Targa roll bar, while the removable roof panel’s black vinyl covering is free of any rips or tears. It rides on a set of 15-inch Fuchs alloy wheels with silver rims and ‘petal’ spokes over matt black centres. All four have recently been refurbished and are in great shape.

Moving inside, the cabin is described by the seller as being in excellent condition. The seats have previously been re-trimmed in black leather and present very well, with only minor wear and creasing to their surfaces in line with the car’s use. Elsewhere, the interior trim is in great shape, and while there are a few age-related marks to the black-painted metal surfaces including the seat hinges and handbrake lever, this only adds to the car’s classic appeal.

The black vinyl-clad door cards are also very smart; however the upholstery covering the parcel shelf is lifting where it meets the rear window. All of the interior buttons, switches and electrical items are reported to work without fault, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.

The 2.4-litre engine was completely overhauled and rebuilt in 2017 by an experienced classic Porsche mechanic, Classic Top Car Garage in Lucca, Italy. Since then it has driven around 2,000 km and, as a result, runs beautifully. Freshly serviced by Le Belle Auto in around September 2020, this 911 S is said to be in very good mechanical condition. The work included an oil and filter change, as well as replacement of spark plugs, brake hoses, and oil cooler piping.

The car’s last Revisione roadworthiness inspection has just been performed, and no faults or defects were found. All four wheels are fitted with Goodyear Eagle NCT 5 tyres in size 195/65 R15, which the vendor reports are in excellent condition and with ample usable tread remaining; however they may benefit from replacement due to their age.

This low-owner Porsche 911 2.4 S Targa is a wonderful example of a desirable classic, which benefits from a recent engine and is as enjoyable to look at as it is to drive. Providing exciting performance and typically robust mechanicals in one stylish package, it will make a fine addition to any collection of Porsches. However, it will be best enjoyed on the open road, with the Targa top removed and the warm summer sun overhead.
