1973 LOTUS ELAN +2 COUPE

This Lotus Elan +2 Coupe is a fabulous classic British sports car, benefitting from an extensive restoration and presented in an attractive colour scheme. It is powered by a 1.6-litre Lotus-Ford Twin Cam inline-four, which drives the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer displays just 41,135 miles from new.

First registered in May 1973, this right-hand drive +2 was originally finished in Regency Red, as denoted by the ‘L011’ code on its chassis plate. It was acquired by its current keeper approximately five years ago, who purchased it from another collector, and then commissioned the restoration.

During the renovation, which was completed in 2019, this Elan’s body and chassis were separated. The former was refinished in an appealing blue and silver colour combination, while the latter was cleaned and painted to protect it from any future corrosion. The work was clearly executed to a high standard, as evidenced by the body’s flush, even shut lines and the bright, glossy paintwork. The vendor describes the finish as being in excellent condition, with no noticeable marks or blemishes to speak of, and the exterior trim also presents very well. Furthermore, the car’s door and window seals were replaced, and remain in good order. This Elan rides on a period-correct set of 13-inch Dunlop alloy wheels with black painted centres and polished rims.

Moving inside, this classic British sports car’s cabin has been retrimmed in beige vinyl, which covers its seats, door cards and transmission tunnel. Overall, the upholstery is in excellent condition, and while there are a few minor marks to its surfaces, it is free of any rips or tears. The walnut veneer dashboard is in good order, but has faded somewhat and features a few minor chips and cracks. The white lettering which usually labels the car’s controls is also missing, along with the black plastic knobs which cover the ends of the heater control sliders. This +2 has been fitted with a modern, retro-styled radio, which provides Bluetooth and USB connectivity. All of the car’s buttons, switches and electrical items are reported to work as they should.

Having been treated to an extensive restoration, this Elan +2 is reported to be in fine mechanical health. Its most recent routine maintenance included replacement of the engine oil, oil filter, spark plugs, brake fluid and auxiliary belt, as well as a service of the electrical components.

Completed in 2019, its renovation included a full engine rebuild, as well as refurbishment of the carburettors and suspension components, plus the installation of an electronic ignition system. All four wheels are fitted with Toyo 350 tyres in size 175/70 R13, which are described by the seller as being in very good condition.

This Lotus Elan +2 is a charming classic sports car, which adds touch more practicality to the marque’s distinctive style and renowned handling characteristics. Recently restored and finished in a particularly attractive colour scheme, this +2 will make a fine addition to any collection, and is a great choice for a sunny weekend drive or classic car show.
