1972 PORSCHE 911T 2.4 - LHD

This Porsche 911 T 2.4 is a remarkable example of an iconic 1970s sports car, benefiting from a recent exhaustive restoration, and finished in its original factory colours. Under the engine lid is the numbers-matching 130hp carburettor-fed and air-cooled 2,341cc flat-six, driven through a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 94,051 km (58,441 miles).

A notable feature of this 911 is the presence of the external oil filler flap, which appears only on 1972 models - the result of a significant effort to improve the car’s handling balance. To shift the car’s centre of gravity forwards, Porsche relocated the dry sump oil tank to ahead of the right rear wheel, which moved more of the weight inside the wheelbase.

The change necessitated a separate filler cap on the wing, but the story goes that it confused fuel station attendants, and that petrol was sometimes poured into the oil tank by mistake. Whether myth or truth, the design was swapped back by 1973, and thus the 1972 models that feature the side oil filler are now sought after by collectors.

This 911 T left the factory finished in Light Yellow, with black leatherette interior trim, black Porsche script decals on the body and with 15-inch alloy wheels. Initially registered in its home market of Germany and supplied by Porsche AG Hamburg, it was exported to the UK in early 1982, where it was re-registered on 4 August that year. It is now offered directly from its current collector owner, who acquired it one year ago.

The car was subject of a nut-and-bolt ground-up restoration in 2012, this 911 T remains in superb condition today. Invoices on file show the total cost of the refurbishment came to just shy of £92,000, with more than £40,000 spent on restoring and refinishing the bodywork. Today, it remains in excellent condition, as shown by the detailed set of photos below. All of the body trims and brightwork elements present beautifully, and the car rides on 15-inch Fuch alloy wheels.

Its interior is in equally impressive order, with black leatherette covering the front sport seats, rear seats and dashboard. There is no heavy wear or discolouration, and only very slight creasing giving a ‘just worn in’ appearance to the upholstery. Ahead of the driver is a three-spoke Momo Prototipo steering wheel, as well as the classic row of five VDO instrument gauges in the main binnacle. There are no known electrical faults, with all of the column stalks and levers working perfectly.

The last scheduled service was in June 2020 at 94,022 miles, when the engine oil and filter were changed, along with the brake fluid. It is understood that the engine was rebuilt by Porsche Reading during the 2012 restoration, and in December 2015 the previous owner spent £19,413 with Porsche Reading to refresh the refurbishment. The carburettors have been rebuilt, a new wiring loom was installed, and a new fuel tank has been fitted. The underbody and arches were sealed, and the car was put through a four-wheel alignment session.

The most recent MOT test was on 24 June 2020 at 94,023 miles, when it achieved a first-time pass with no advisories. The wheels are fitted with Dunlop SP Sport FastResponse tyres on all four corners, which remain in very good condition.

Accompanying the car is an extensive history file containing a raft of invoices, as well as a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. A full-size spare wheel is stored under the front boot carpet, and a tool kit is also present.

This Porsche 911 T 2.4 is an outstanding classic sports car, boasting a thoroughly engaging driving experience thanks to its characterful air-cooled flat-six and inherent low weight. Given its remarkable condition following the recent nut-and-bolt restoration, this car will no doubt prove a compelling offer for collectors who have been seeking a top-notch example, but it also deserves to be driven as intended, delivering a time-warp experience on the road.
