1972 JAGUAR E-TYPE SERIES 3 V12 2+2 FHC

This Jaguar E-Type Series 3 is an elegant 2+2 coupe model, which is believed to be a highly original and low mileage example. Its engine is the 5.3-litre V12 fed by Zenith carburettors, producing a claimed 272bhp at launch, and in this car is coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer indicates just 34,244 miles from new.

An original right-hand drive car, this E-Type is understood to have been previously registered overseas. It is recorded as being first registered in the UK in March 1985, and has had three previous keepers since then. The seller has owned the Jaguar for the last six years, where it has been part of a private collection of 22 cars, and has been maintained by an in-house mechanic.

Having been subject to some restoration work earlier in its life, the body presents in generally very good order today. The shut lines and panel gaps are sound, and there is no sign of any rust aside from some superficial surface corrosion in a few places. Its black paintwork is in fair condition, with a glossy finish across the panels, and only some evidence of the previous red paint along the sills and under some of the trim. Overall, this is a usable classic with an appealing patina to the coachwork.

Inside, the black vinyl upholstery is believed to be original, and features smart basketweave pattern centre panels. There is general wear and tear present around the interior trim, but in general it presents well for a near 50-year-old car. All of the switchgear and gauges appear to be as they left the factory, including the three-spoke steering wheel and gear knob, and there are no known electrical faults.

Given the very low mileage, it has unsurprisingly received only basic maintenance as required while in the aforementioned private collection. It has been kept in good running order, and has been put through regular MOT tests, with annual inspections over the last seven years. There are invoices in the file from Jaguar specialist Norman Motors Ltd dated from 2012 to 2014, covering various replacement components. While the engine bay could be smartened up, the car seems to be running well - though will likely need some mechanical attention as it has not been used on the road for some time.

The last MOT test was carried out on 7 December 2019 at 34,259 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories. Its tyres have plenty of tread, but would likely benefit from replacement on the basis of age.

It is accompanied by a small file of paperwork, including a valuation letter from Kingsbury Services dated 11 September 1989. The letter states that the mileage at this time was 33,151 miles, and that it had received restoration works from the company.

This Jaguar E-Type Series 3 is a charming 2+2 coupe, with the engaging combination of a characterful naturally aspirated V12 with a manual transmission. Its indicated low mileage is believed to be entirely genuine, especially as it presents in such original condition. This fine British classic would make a great base for a sympathetic refurbishment, but is ready to be used and enjoyed.
