1972 FIAT 500L 'LUSSO'

This 1972 Fiat 500L ‘Lusso’ is a wonderful example of the characterful classic, presented in the charming hue of Rosso Corallo and benefitting from a full mechanical and cosmetic restoration. It is powered by its original 499cc two-cylinder engine, which is mated to a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer indicates 19,798 km; however, this is not warranted.

A high-spec ‘Lusso’ model, this example features a number of refined extras over the standard 500, including chrome bumper overriders at the front and rear, rectangular tail lights, ribbed vinyl seats and a horizontal Veglia instrument panel, as well as front-hinged doors and a half-length retractable canvas roof.

Built in 1972, this original Italian-market example is believed to have had only one keeper prior to its restoration, and it is now offered for sale by the trade in Italy.

Already a solid, rust-free car with no evidence of any accident damage, this 500L is fresh from a restoration. As such, its bodywork is in excellent condition, and has been fully repainted in its original hue of Rosso Corallo. The finish has a glossy and even appearance around the car, and the underbody is similarly smart.

All of the exterior trim, including the characteristic Lusso overriders is in good shape, and while there are some small marks on the metal trim surrounding the windscreen, this only adds to the car’s classic appeal. The black canvas hood presents well, with a few minor blemishes but no rips or tears to its surface. The car rides on the correct set of 12-inch steel wheels, which are fitted with polished hub caps and are in very good order.

Moving inside, the cabin has been lightly refurbished while retaining a number of its original components and trim items. The seats and door cards have been reupholstered in the correct fluted black vinyl, and show no noticeable signs of wear. Ahead, the steering wheel and dashboard have a charming light patina, and the car also features its original rubber floor mats, helping to tell the story of an Italian icon which has seen nearly 50 years of use. The vendor reports that there are no faults with any of the switches or electrical items, and the car will be inspected again prior to delivery to its next owner.

This 500’s recent routine maintenance was carried out in January 2021 by Officina DN Auto, who replaced the engine oil and filters, and the fan belt was changed earlier this year.

During its recent restoration, the car’s engine and gearbox were also fully rebuilt, ensuring that it is in excellent running order. While its last Revisione roadworthiness inspection was carried out in 2019 (and resulted in a pass without any warnings) the vendor will have it re-tested before it is handed over to its buyer. All four wheels are shod in Cinturato CN54 tyres, which are only around 20% worn and are in excellent condition.

The car will be accompanied by its restored original jack, a number of invoices for past service work and photographs documenting its restoration. The car also comes with the rear luggage rack and case shown in the gallery.
