1972 DE TOMASO PANTERA

KEY FACTS

  • This De Tomaso Pantera is an imposing Italian muscle car, with a striking red finish and very low mileage.
  • It is powered by a 5.8-litre Ford Cleveland V8, coupled to a five-speed ‘dogleg’ manual transmission.
  • Having been purchased by the vendor from the Beverly Hills Car Club in 2018, it was shipped to the UK and placed into a heated storage unit upon arrival.
  • The car is now a UK taxes-paid vehicle, and it has also gone through the official NOVA import process with the relevant documents on file. The next owner will be responsible for registering the vehicle with the DVLA.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • The Pantera was produced between 1971 and 1992. To find an early version with mostly original parts is increasingly hard due to many owners choosing to modify these cars.
  • This car was specified with red paintwork and black leather upholstery.
  • It still rides on its original magnesium Campagnolo wheels.
  • The cabin has been equipped with an aftermarket four-spoke steering wheel, which is believed to be the only non-original part on the car.

CONDITION

  • The rear deck lid has sustained some damage, which will need to be repaired, but there is no other known bodywork damage.
  • The red paintwork is in fair overall condition, with various age-related scratches and stone chips around the whole car, as well as some early signs of corrosion on the front scuttle and some wear to the sills. However, the car is reported to have lived its life in a dry state while in the US, and therefore its body shell is believed to be solid.
  • Inside, the cabin is in good order, with some age-related creases on the dashboard and the door trims, while a few marks can be seen on the central armrest. The black seats are in good shape, with only a few creases to their surfaces.
  • The car has been off the road for a number of years now and would benefit from a mechanical inspection and overhaul to ensure it is in roadworthy condition. However, the wiring and electrics are believed to be in full working order.

SUMMARY

This De Tomaso Pantera is a fair example of the rare Italian muscle car, which was shipped from a dry state climate in the US to the UK in 2018 and immediately placed into heated storage. Now in need of some cosmetic and mechanical improvements, it would make a rewarding simple restoration project for any professional or DIY enthusiast without the need for any major body or structural restoration.
