1972 CHEVROLET CAMARO SS 396

KEY FACTS

  • A highly original example of the exceedingly rare big-block American muscle car - one of only 970 built.
  • While badged as a ‘396’, the engine is strictly a 402ci (6.6-litre) V8, driving the rear wheels through a desirable and lesser-seen manual transmission.
  • 1972 was a pivotal year for the Camaro, with this being the last time that the SS 396 and SS 350 models were produced.
  • This car was imported from the US in 2015 and re-registered with the DVLA in November that year. It was acquired by the vendor five years ago.
  • The indicated mileage is not correct, and may be the distance since the prior refurbishment, or it may have gone around the clock once.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • This ‘SS’ retains its original bill of sale and documentation, confirming that the original engine, transmission and axles remain in place. All of the original options are also documented.
  • The ‘Super Sport’ package incorporated performance upgrades, including sport suspension, an SS-specific bonnet, SS wheel covers, bucket seats, and SS emblems.
  • To the best of the vendor’s knowledge, there have been no modifications to the vehicle, with any replacement parts being of original OEM factory specification.
  • From the factory, this Camaro was equipped with a strong specification, including the four-speed manual transmission, ‘Positraction’ axle, air-conditioning, and power steering.
  • Included with the vehicle are the original sales invoices and purchase documents, factory specification list, owner’s manual, and period promotional material all kept in an organised binder.

CONDITION

  • There is no body damage to the vehicle, and all of the shut lines remain even, with no sign of any impacts on the panels.
  • The repainted Sequoia Green paintwork remains in excellent condition throughout and shows very little sign of wear and very few marks or chips.
  • All four wheels are pristine, and are wrapped in matching Firestone ‘Wide O Oval’ tyres.
  • Inside, the vinyl interior has been refreshed and is in virtually unmarked condition, with only light creasing noted to the outer bolster of the driver’s seat.
  • The carpets, headliner, dashboard and centre console are all in great shape, as are the high-use areas such as the steering wheel and shifter.
  • There are a few minor flaws to the interior, with a small hole noted in the rear pillar trim, and some discolouration to the door cards, along with small marks on the parcel shelf.
  • There are no known faults with this Camaro, and no warning lights on the dashboard.
  • Owing to its age, this Camaro is exempt from mandatory MOT testing; however the last exam in May 2017 at an indicated 968 miles resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • The latest service took place during August 2019 at 1,710 miles. This work included a full oil and filter change, fresh air filter fitment and replacement of the spark plugs.
  • Prior to this, the car has also had a previous oil and filter change during the vendor’s five-year ownership period.
  • Outside of servicing, the car has received a full new exhaust system to OEM specifications, OEM tyres, and renewed brakes.
