1972 ALFA ROMEO 2000 GTV

This Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV is an outstanding example of the iconic 1970s sporting GT, presented in fully restored condition and in a timeless colour scheme. Under the bonnet is the tuneful 2.0-litre twin-cam, producing around 130bhp, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 7,785 miles, and the car has covered around 1,300 miles since the full restoration. It has been garaged in a temperature and humidity controlled environment whenever not in use.

An original UK-market right-hand drive example, the Alfa was first registered on 1 June 1972 and has six previous keepers on the logbook. It has been in the vendor’s ownership since April 2018.

Between 2017 and 2018, this 2000 GTV was subject to a comprehensive restoration to an as-new specification by VeloceSport in Lincolnshire, which was fully documented by the photographs shown in the gallery below. The body was completely refurbished, along with a new bonnet and boot, and new front and rear bumpers, and chassis rust was rectified. All badging, lights, door handles and the wing mirrors were replaced. It was given a Waxoyl treatment and undersealed, and the car was painted in vibrant Rosso Alfa. The scuttle panel was also renewed during the restoration, along with both front and rear screens. It now rides on 14-inch GTA-style alloy wheels.

Inside, this Alfa Romeo is in equally remarkable condition, with the fresh black leather upholstery showing no significant wear to speak of, and only light creasing on the seats that give it a ‘run in’ appearance. The black leather was chosen carefully to mimic the original vinyl upholstery fitted to all cars. The door panels and internal mechanisms have been fully rebuilt and are also in great shape, and there is smart black carpeting fitted throughout the cabin with new underlay. All of the stainless-steel trims were also renewed.

Ahead of the driver is the correct dished three-spoke steering wheel, with its handsome wood rim complementing the trim across the dashboard and in the centre console. The vendor reports a small heat crack on the dashboard, which is a common foible on this era of Alfa, but the original panels are no longer available, so the owner has left it as-is. The headlining has been replaced, and the car has been fitted with a new wiring loom.

Its last scheduled maintenance was carried out in March 2020 at VeloceSport, when the car went in for a check-over and an engine oil and filter change. It has returned to VeloceSport annually since the restoration for regular servicing.

During the total rebuild, the engine was stripped and reassembled, with refurbished carburettors and an overhauled gearbox. The steering box, idler and all ancillary components were restored to as close to factory specification as possible, including new hoses and clips, new engine mounts, a new radiator fan, ignition leads, a new fuel pump, fuel line and a new fuel tank and sender. The radiator was thoroughly cleaned and repainted in satin black, and a new battery was fitted.

The car received a suspension overhaul, with the assembly stripped down and put back together with new adjustable red Koni shock absorbers. The braking system was also rebuilt with new parts, including all new copper pipes and unions. A new three-piece clutch kit was installed, along with new hydraulics, and new clutch master and slave cylinders. Finally, the steering was also refurbished, including a laser tracking alignment, and a new sports exhaust system was fitted.

The most recent MOT was on 16 April 2018 at 6,411 miles, when it achieved a first-time pass with no advisories or defects. This is the only MOT on file for the last 15 years. Its GTA-style wheels were fitted with brand-new Kumho tyres during the restoration, so these are still in superb condition.

Accompanying the car is an Alfa Romeo Owners guide, two sets of keys – some original – a black cloth dust cover, as well a complete photographic record of the restoration, which is also shown in the gallery below.

This Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV is a charming Italian classic, presented in outstanding mechanical and cosmetic condition following its total restoration at a renowned marque specialist. Given the attention to detail and quality of the components and finishes, this is unquestionably ‘better than new’, and is now ready for many more miles in the hands of its next enthusiast owner.
