1971 TRIUMPH TR6 150PI - WITH HARDTOP

This Triumph TR6 is a characterful classic British sports car, featuring the desirable 150bhp engine, its original hardtop, and presented in remarkable, unrestored condition. Under the bonnet is the 2.5-litre straight-six with Lucas mechanical fuel-injection, allied to a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. The odometer displays 76,018 miles from new.

Launched in 1969, the Triumph TR6 continued the marque’s tradition of building handsome, driver-focused cars, with Autocar magazine heralding it as “the last of the real sports cars” at the time. An original right-hand drive car, but understood to have been first registered overseas, this example was imported to the UK in 2016. Its previous owner was the president of the TR6 Owners Club in Sweden.

Finished in its original hue of Saffron Yellow, the bodywork presents very well, with no evidence of previous damage and smooth, even shut lines. The vibrant paint has a bright, glossy appearance across the panels and has few blemishes to speak of, with the vendor noting a small mark on the rear, which has been touched in.

All of the body trims are also in very good order. Though there are general age-related marks and chips on the black painted grille, the chrome bumpers, headlight rings and door mirrors are in great shape, while the light lenses are bright and free of any chips or cracks. This TR6 rides on a correct set of 15-inch steel wheels with polished rims. All four are in good order, with the correct ‘TR6’ centre caps.

Providing some much-needed protection from the temperamental British weather, the black convertible hood is very smart, with no signs of tears or damage to its surface. The car is also supplied with a rare colour-matched hardtop for the cooler, more inclement months, which is described by the seller as being unblemished.

On stepping into the cabin, it is clear that the TR6 was designed with driving pleasure in mind. Straight ahead, the thin-rimmed, three-spoke steering wheel and large gauges put the driver in full control, while the bolsters of the factory-fitted seats help to keep them in place during more spirited outings.

Presented in fantastic overall condition, the interior exhibits the type of handsome patina that is accrued over many years of careful ownership. While there are some slight marks and blemishes, including a small split on the vinyl below the glovebox and fine cracks to the wood veneered dashboard, these are minor issues for a vehicle of this vintage and do not detract from its overall charm.

The seller notes that a digital speedometer has been fitted to provide a more accurate readout compared to the original analogue gauge, and the radio has also been replaced with a reconditioned, period-correct Mannheim L vintage unit. The vendor commissioned the radio from specialist supplier Chrome London, which was adapted to provide iPhone connectivity and an MP3 autoswitch lead – adding a modern touch to this classic sports car. All of the buttons, switches and electrical items are reported to work correctly.

While under the current ownership, this Triumph has been serviced and repaired whenever required and remains in great mechanical health today. Its most recent scheduled maintenance was carried out in April 2019 at 76,018 miles by Triumph specialist Abinger Hammer Motors in Dorking, which performed a full service, including replacement of the engine oil, oil filter and coolant, as well as fitting a new passenger door lock barrel.

Prior to this, Abinger Hammer Motors serviced the car in both 2018 and 2017, while in 2016 the engine was treated to a top-end refresh. This included replacement of the throttle spindle bushes, line boring of the inlet manifolds, and the fitting of lead-free exhaust valve seats, removing the need for fuel additives. New wheel cylinders have also been fitted for improved braking and Spax adjustable dampers have been fitted to the car’s front end to enhance its road-holding abilities.

Now MOT exempt due to its age, this TR6’s last documented test was conducted on 15 June 2016 at 75,713 miles, which it passed first time without a single advisory. This appealing classic has recently been fitted with a brand-new set of tyres in size 195/65 R15, which remain in great condition.

Accompanying the car are its original handbook, logbook, repair operation manual and a copy of the workshop manual, plus the owner’s handbook for the aftermarket Spax adjustable dampers. The seller is including the rare matching hard top and black vinyl tonneau cover as part of the sale.

This Triumph TR6 150PI is a handsome example of one of the marque’s best sports cars, which is presented in excellent, unrestored condition and finished in a rare factory colour. Well cared-for both inside and out, this delightful classic is in great shape, running and driving smoothly and without fault – making it an ideal candidate for open-topped summer drives and memorable weekend getaways.
