1971 MGB GT

This 1971 MG BGT is a superb example of the perennially popular classic coupe, which benefits from a respray in Midnight Blue and which is in excellent mechanical order. Under the bonnet sits the 1.8-litre B-Series inline four engine producing around 95bhp, coupled with a four-speed manual transmission with working overdrive. The odometer currently indicates 97,003 miles, though the correct total is believed to be around 76,000 miles.

First registered in March 1971, this MGB GT has seven previous keepers recorded on the log book, and was acquired by its current owner around one year ago.

The bodywork presents in excellent condition, with flush shut lines, smooth panels and no sign of any damage. Its Midnight Blue paintwork is in very good order, with vendor noting only small blemishes around the boot and window seals. All of the chromework is reported to be in excellent condition. The car rides on a set of 14-inch Rostyle wheels, which present with only minor marks and imperfections, and which bolster the car’s period-correct appearance.

Moving inside, the black leather upholstery is in good condition and presents with just some age-related creasing. The dashboard trim presents with some light scratching, though this is commensurate with the age and mileage, and the main contact points present very well – especially the three-spoke Mountney steering wheel. All of the cabin’s electrics are reported to be in good working order, and the vendor indicates there are no warning lights present on the dashboard.

The last service was undertaken in September 2020, where technicians at KSM Classics carried out a carburettor rebuild and a radiator flush before fitting a new master cylinder, timing belt and replacement seatbelts, as well as carrying out an engine oil and filter change. The vendor indicates the car has also received new brake discs and pads all round, plus a new clutch.

The car is exempt from mandatory annual MOT testing, and the last inspection on file was on 23 June 2011 at an indicated 94,077 miles. The tyres are around two years old and remain in good condition, with 5-6mm of tread.

Accompanying the vehicle is a history file that the vendor states has extensive documentation with invoices for various parts and labour.

This MGB GT is a smart British sports coupe presented in unmodified condition, and which is reported to be structurally superb and with a handsome Midnight Blue finish. If you have been seeking an MGB that is ready to drive straight away, then this is a great opportunity to acquire a well-maintained example with working overdrive, which can be enjoyed without worrying too much about the odd stone chip or mark to the paintwork.
