1971 MAZDA COSMO SERIES II

This 1971 Mazda Cosmo Series II is a highly collectable Japanese classic, of which only 833 examples were built. The car is powered by the 982cc ‘0813’ version of the marque’s Wankel rotary engine, producing up to 130hp, coupled with a five-speed manual transmission – and will push on to around 120mph thanks to its streamlined design. The odometer currently indicates 1,277 km, though this is not warranted.

This Cosmo features the correct larger grille of the desirable Series II, with two additional vents each side of the opening, as well as an extended wheelbase for a more comfortable ride and extra interior space. First registered in January 1971, this Mazda Cosmo Series II is understood to have spent a considerable portion of its life in a private collection in Japan. It was imported to the UK last year and re-registered in November 2020, and is now offered for sale by the trade.

The bodywork of this Cosmo presents very well, with flush shut lines and straight panels. The Mazda White paintwork is reported to be in good condition, with only a few small chips that are consistent with age. The low-slung front end has fared very well and the chrome body trims all appear to be in good shape for what is now a 50-year-old car. The 15-inch factory steel wheels are in very good order, with only a few minor marks.

Inside, the seats have been re-trimmed with a combination of chequered fabric centre panels and black leatherette bolsters, presenting in excellent condition throughout. The red carpets are in good order, and the black headlining is just showing some slight sagging. The dashboard retains a neat, unmodified appearance, with no noticeable damage, and ahead of the driver is a Nardi Torino steering wheel. A pair of Fujitsu Ten speakers has been installed behind the headrests, and all of the electrics are reported to be in good working order.

The vendor reports that during the current ownership, the vehicle has received a new air filter and spark plugs. The Federal tyres are reported to be two years old, with plenty of tread remaining.

This 1972 Mazda Cosmo Series II is a very smart example of a rare and collectable Japanese classic, which benefits from a re-trimmed interior and well-presented body panels and paint. Presented in excellent condition in its 50th birthday year, this Cosmo Series II would be an unusual addition to any collection, and an attention-grabbing car for classic shows.
