1971 DATSUN 510 SSS COUPE 'BLUEBIRD'

This 1971 Datsun Bluebird SSS is a fine example of the sought-after 510-series coupe, presented in smart condition throughout and benefitting from a number of subtle modifications. Under the bonnet is the 109bhp 1.6-litre inline-four, which is fed by dual carburettors, and drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer displays 27,617 km; however, this is not warranted.

First introduced in 1967, the 510 soon became known for its rallying prowess, thanks to its robust engine, light weight and nimble handling. As the sportier ‘SSS’ model, this example features twin SU carburettors and an uprated camshaft, as well as a six-gauge dashboard and redesigned tail lights. The car currently resides in Hong Kong.

Today, the bodywork presents very well, with no evidence of any prior damage, and the underbody is also very tidy. Having been partly or fully resprayed in the past, the Champagne Silver paintwork is in good condition, with a few age-related marks including minor stone chips and a blemish on the roof. The exterior trim is also in good order, though the matt black grille would benefit from being refinished.

The car also features all of its correct badges, which have an attractive light patina, as do the chromed door handles and wing mirrors. While the bodywork itself has not been altered, this Bluebird’s suspension has been lowered for sharper handling and a more aggressive look. It also rides on a rare and period-appropriate set of 14-inch Speed Star (SSR) Mk.2 alloy wheels, which are in great shape.

Inside, the cabin is very smart given the car’s age, and has a charming patina throughout. The seats feature brown vinyl bolsters and beige woven centres and are in good order; however, the vendor notes that the rear bench does show some signs of wear. Ahead, the steering wheel’s black-painted spokes are flaking slightly, but this is strictly a cosmetic issue, and an extended metal gear lever has been fitted for a sportier driving experience.

Elsewhere, the trim is in fair condition, though the wood-effect vinyl covering the centre console is lifting and there is a crack in the plastic trim beside the rear passenger arm rest. For added peace of mind, the dashboard is fitted with an aftermarket set of Defi gauges, which display the oil temperature, oil pressure, and water temperature. The vendor states that there are no faults with any of the buttons, switches or electrical items, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.

This classic Datsun’s most recent routine maintenance was an engine oil and filter change, which was carried out in June 2020 at an indicated 27,598 km. During the vendor’s ownership, the brake fluid has also been changed and the carburettor has been adjusted.

While 510 Bluebirds are popular platforms for modification, this example remains largely standard. Nonetheless, it does feature a few enhancements, including an aftermarket aluminium radiator, blue silicone hoses, matching blue ignition leads, and an aftermarket ignition system. Overall, the vendor states that the car runs and drives well, but it would benefit from having its carburettor retuned if it is to be driven in a different climate.

Its last roadworthiness inspection was conducted around 18 months ago, which it passed without any warnings or advisories. All four wheels are fitted with Dunlop Direnza ZII tyres, which have 90% of their original tread remaining and appear to be in very good condition.

This 1971 Datsun Bluebird 1600 SSS is a fine example of the classic 510-series coupe, which is in good driving order and is presented in good, rust-free condition. Lightly modified, it is ready to enjoy as-is, and would make a great addition to any collection of Japanese classics.
