1970 PORSCHE 911 TARMAC RALLY CAR

This 1970 Porsche 911 Tarmac Rally Car is a professionally prepared classic competition vehicle, which was built to MSA historic specification by XS Racing in 2007 to exacting standards, and has since seen sparing motorsport use. It is equipped with a 3.0-litre twin-plug flat-six engine using Supertec parts, fed by PMO carburettors and with electronic ignition, tuned to around 265bhp. It is coupled to a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission with GT internals, an LSD, and rebuild by Mike Bainbridge approximately 1,000 miles ago. The odometer currently indicates 3,712 miles, which is understood to be the distance covered since the bespoke rebuild to rally specification. The car was stored and not used from 2014 to 2019, when the vendor purchased it.

Understood to have been built in late 1970, the chassis number confirms it as a 1971 model year 911. An online HPI check notes the first UK registration date as 1980, and a colour change from silver to orange is recorded in 1981. The car has been with the current owner for just over one year, and is only for sale due to their retirement from motorsport.

The car was prepared to MSA Category 2 ‘Stage Rally Tarmac’ specification by XS Racing in 2007, fully strengthened and seam-welded which included the fitment of a full Custom Cages roll cage, with a bare-metal respray, Bilstein suspension on all four corners, a quick steering rack, full under-guards and a competition exhaust system. The body was modified with a fibreglass bonnet and Cibie spot lamps, as well as a fibreglass engine cover and rear spoiler. In full rally trim, it weighs just 1060kg.

This 911’s bright orange paintwork is described as being in very good condition, presenting with just some stone chips around the front bumper and wheel arches. The vendor notes the car has seen minimal tarmac-only competition use since the build, so there are no signs of damage or heavy wear. Its light lenses and body trims are in good order, and the flanks are embellished with Porsche decals. The car rides on 15-inch eight-spoke Minilite alloy wheels, which are pristine.

Moving inside, as part of its competition preparation, this 911 features Recaro seats, a hydraulic handbrake, a Windrush Evolutions gear linkage, and a fully plumbed in fire safety system. All electrics are fused and relayed, while the cabin also comes with Brantz timing clocks and a heated front windscreen. The seat belts, seats and 55-litre ATL bag tank are out of date for stage rallying, though the vendor notes this does not apply to regularity rallying. The fire extinguisher will also need re-dating. To renew the items for stage rallying is believed to cost around £3,000. The vendor has also indicated some slight wear to the driver’s seat, though this is very minor, and all of the switchgear is reported to work as it should. The cabin also boasts a lightweight wiring loom by Bremax Electronics, which is purpose-made for competition Porsches.

The car was recommissioned in December 2019 and prepared for this year’s Classic Marathon, though the event cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The transmission was rebuilt and given higher ratios in fourth and fifth gear to suit regularity rallying, while the clutch and pressure plate were switched from hill climb specification to rally specification, and everything was ‘bolt checked’ and made ready for the Classic Marathon. The heater was reinstalled, and the engine oil, filters, and spark plugs were also changed. The car was also fully trimmed and sound-proofed so it could run in daytime road rallies and endurance regularity rallies.

The most recent MOT test was on 13 January 2020 at an indicated 2,794 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories. The wheels come wrapped with Pirelli P7 Corsa Classic wet tyres, which are reported to have around 4mm of tread remaining. The car comes with 12 spare Minilite wheels – in 6-inch, 7-inch and 8-inch sizes – and a mix of tarmac slicks, road legal tarmac, and forest driving tyres as shown in the photo gallery.

This Porsche 911 Tarmac Rally Car is a superb custom build, benefitting from a major recommissioning service in 2019, and now presenting in ready-to-rally condition. The vendor reports that it is an ideal vehicle for stage and regularity rallying, hill climbs or track days, and has proven to be a reliable and thrilling race-prepared vehicle since its professional conversion, and overall an absolute joy to drive.
