1970 MORRIS MINI COOPER S

Despite their humble roots as affordable vehicles for the masses, very few everyday cars can still turn heads quite like Alec Issigonis’ creation that we’ve all come to know simply as ‘the Mini’. A revolution in packaging and style, it also provided giant-killing performance in motorsport guise across rallying and circuit racing. The most famous name associated with that performance aspect belongs to John Cooper, and this 1970 Morris Mini Cooper S is a lovely representation of that.

Purchased in 1995 by the current owner, this vehicle was subject to a complete restoration over a three year period. It is fitted with a 1.3-litre (1275cc) inline-four engine coupled with a four-speed manual gearbox. The odometer shows 11,672 miles since its restoration.

Externally, the Navy Blue paintwork is in extremely good condition, with only some areas of paint bubbling apparent on the left hand door and a minimal number of stone chips. The brightwork and rubber seals have aged well. All panels fit evenly and gaps are consistent around the body. Contrasting smartly with the Navy duco, the white roof and bonnet stripes add a dash of nostalgia and reflect the sporting character. All glazing and external lighting are in fine shape.

As per all original Mini cars, the spaciousness of the interior defies the compact nature of the overall design. It is decidedly well-appointed for its ilk, replete with black leather seats fitted during the restoration, and a stunning polished wood-rimmed Mountney sports steering wheel. The seats themselves are in great condition, with only some wear to the black piping on the side of the driver’s seat to note. The door cards and carpet are in excellent condition. Adding to the standard features inside are a period style analogue tachometer mounted directly above the steering column, and a modern aftermarket car stereo fitted below the dashboard which powers two speakers that sit on to the rear parcel shelf.

Under the bonnet, the engine looks to be in original condition, with remnants of the factory applied green paint still present on the engine block. Fed by twin fuel tanks in the boot, the engine has a throaty and eager note.

At each corner, the 10-inch Minilite-style wheels are all in good shape, with another found in the boot fitted with the spare tyre. They are shod with modern tyres that are approximately five years old; all with a good amount of tread depth remaining.

It was last serviced in 2020 when it showed 11,600 miles on the odometer. Since its restoration it has also benefitted from a re-commissioning of the brakes, with annual oil and fluid changes in recent years. There are no faults to report, and everything works as it should.

Currently registered, it can be enjoyed just as it is by buckling yourself in and turning the ignition key, to experience the unique driving character and sense of connection with the road that only these classic ‘pocket rockets’ can offer. Alternatively, it could be upgraded and modified to form the basis of a competitive historic race or rally car, or it could even be further improved to concours levels if so desired.
