1970 FIAT-ABARTH 595 SS

Presented in superb restored condition, this Fiat-Abarth 595 SS (Esseesse) is an exceptionally rare and exciting hot hatch – believed to be one of only seven such examples built by the factory in 1970. The pinnacle of the Fiat 500-based conversions at the time, the ‘Sprint Speciale’ is powered by a big-bore cylinder block 594cc engine, fed by a Solex carburettor and producing around 34bhp, driving the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.

Changes to the engine included the fitting of polished exhaust ports and manifold pipes, high-compression pistons and an uprated camshaft. The suspension was also lowered and wider wheels and tyres were fitted, helping to enhance the handling. Its significant power boost over the standard 500D delivered not only rapid acceleration, but also an 80mph top speed.

Not to be confused with the myriad replicas on the market, this car was originally delivered within Italy, and comes with its ‘libretto’ documentation from 1970 confirming that it is a genuine Fiat-Abarth 595 SS. It has also secured a coveted ‘Targa Oro’ identification certificate from the Automotoclub Storico Italiano.

Having been fully restored in 2011, it was imported to the UK in 2015. This fantastic little car has been under the care of its current owner for the past five years, with just 300 km being added to the clock during this time. The odometer indicates a mere 8,587 km.

The bodywork is in excellent condition, with impressive shut lines, while the ‘Bianca’ paint finish is smooth and even all around the car, and has evidently been repainted to a high standard. All of the original brightwork and badging looks great, and there are no signs of damage to the glass or light lenses. As with the bumpers, door mirror and other chromed trim, the exhaust tips are polished to a mirror shine. The car rides on the 12-inch Borrani steel wheels, which are in superb order.

Moving to the cabin, the Nero vinyl and leather upholstery is described by the seller as being in excellent restored condition, with no wear or damage being apparent. While period-style bucket seats are currently fitted, the original seats will also be provided to the new owner. The three-spoke leather-trimmed steering wheel looks original, and only lightly worn, while the rest of the switchgear is also in great shape. A period-correct Autovox Concorde radio is also installed.

Mechanically, this Italian ‘pocket rocket’ is described as being without fault, offering the same peppy performance and spritely handling as it did when new. The seller states that it has been fastidiously maintained, benefitting from the attention of his collection’s in-house mechanic, who ensures that it wants for nothing and is in a constant state of fine tune. Recent work has included replacement of the wheel bearings.

Its last vehicle inspection was carried out on 16 July 2019 at 8,580 km, where it received a first-time pass with no advisories or noted defects. The seller also notes that, in line with Northern Ireland regulations and the current issues with garages’ ability to open, a four-month extension to the re-test date has been successfully applied for. The wheels are shod in 145/70 R12 Ceat Spider tyres, which have plenty of tread.

Included with the car are its original seats, spare wheel and tyre, handbook, spare parts catalogue, and most importantly its original Italian ‘libretto’ that confirms its genuine identity.

One of Abarth’s most famed classic cars, the 595 Esseesse is often replicated, but this well cared-for original is a remarkably rare example in stunning condition throughout. It will no doubt bring joy to its next owner, whether they are behind the wheel for a historic road rally, showing it to a crowd of admiring onlookers, or simply enjoying its charming character in the comfort of their own garage.

All cars and motorbikes on Collecting Cars are run through an online HPI check. This vehicle shows no insurance database markers for damage or theft, and has no finance owing.
