1970 CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO

KEY FACTS

  • A characterful first-generation model, with interesting provenance and strong mechanicals.
  • It is powered by a small-block V8, coupled to an automatic transmission.
  • It has undergone an engine overhaul and a partial interior re-trim, but would now benefit from some cosmetic attention.
  • It was acquired by the vendor in Hawaii, where it was used as a movie prop car. It has since been imported to the UK, where it has featured in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, as well as in music videos by The Zutons and Super Furry Animals.

EQUIPMENT AND OPTIONS

  • The Monte Carlo featured front disc brakes as standard and a similar dashboard to the marque’s Chevelle, with the addition of a simulated wood veneer.
  • This example is equipped with the optional electric windows and air-conditioning system.
  • New wheels were fitted in 2019 to accommodate modern tyre fitments.

CONDITION

  • There is damage or corrosion to the body panels in a few places, notably on the front and rear left-side wings, around both rear roof pillars, and around the driver’s door.
  • Smaller patches of rust can be seen on the headlight surrounds, and above the chrome grille.
  • The seats were reupholstered around ten years ago and now present with just some light creasing. The carpets and headlining have also been replaced.
  • A few surface blemishes are visible on the door card inserts, and the metal door sill covers and dashboard trim pieces are slightly discoloured.
  • The cigarette lighter is inoperative, and the electric windows are known to stick occasionally.
  • The most recent MOT test was on 13 November 2019 at 39,983 miles, which was a first-time pass with no advisories or defects.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • The engine was overhauled in 2019, and was fitted with new rocker covers, fuel lines, spark plugs and a new cooling fan.

SUMMARY

This Chevrolet Monte Carlo is a stylish American muscle car, which is reported to be in good mechanical order and has a smart interior, but is now in need of some attention to the bodywork. With its showbiz provenance, this Chevrolet would make a rewarding cosmetic restoration project, and an interesting addition to any collection of classics.
