1969 PORSCHE 3.2 OUTLAW - LHD

This Porsche 3.2 Outlaw is a ‘hot rod’ sports car with a classic aesthetic, and finished in a vibrant period-correct colour. Under the engine lid is a 3.2-litre air-cooled Porsche flat-six, coupled to a five-speed 915 type manual transmission. The odometer shows 246,875 km, though it is understood to have covered around 10,000 km since its total restoration and custom build.

Understood to have been first registered in February 1969, the chassis number confirms that this is based on a genuine long-wheelbase 912 coupe. It has been in the vendor’s collection for the last year.

Between 2015 and 2018, this car underwent a three-year comprehensive restoration and rebuild to a bespoke ‘Outlaw’ specification at Provost Porsche (Atelier Sport-Classic) in Belgium, costing around €130,000 - not including the cost of the donor car.

The non-sunroof 912 was fully stripped down and its shell sandblasted, and then put on a rotisserie for a detailed inspection and any repairs necessary. There was no prior accident damage, and any rust was removed and rectified with new metal to the highest standards, and all seams were welded to improve the structural rigidity. It was then fully resprayed in Glasurit Viper Green. More than 200 photos of the restoration are in the history file, showing the quality and attention to detail during the work.

Today, the car presents in excellent condition, with just a few minor paint blemishes on the right rear panel, a stone chip on the bumper and another on the right-hand side of the front bonnet. It is fitted with an original steel 911 S specification bumper, and original S body trims. All of the panels are metal. The car also rides on 16-inch Fuchs alloy wheels, finished with satin black centre petals.

Inside, the car is fitted with period-style Le Mans seats in black leather with houndstooth cloth centre panels, which are still in superb condition with minimal signs of use. An OEM carpet kit is fitted, and the door cards have been upgraded to lightweight RS type items. Ahead of the driver is a three-spoke Momo Prototipo steering wheel, chrome bezels for the instrument gauges, and there is 911 T branding on the dashboard. The only known fault with the electrics is that the temperature gauge is inoperative, which is believed to be a sensor problem. However, an upgraded and reconditioned VDO clock with the temperature and oil pressure readouts is included in the sale.

It was given a full check-up in September 2020 at Porsche specialist Van Beurden in Turnhout, Belgium, before going for its regular roadworthiness inspection. During this technical inspection it passed with flying colours, with no remarks or warnings. The wheels are fitted with Yokohama A052 tyres, which are only one month old and are in as-new condition.

The mechanical rebuild during the restoration at Provost Porsche included a switch to a later 3.2-litre air-cooled engine, as well as an uprated starter motor, SSI exhaust and heat exchanges, and an FVD mass air flow meter performance kit. The vendor advises that the gearbox was refurbished as part of the restoration, and that the top end of the engine was rebuilt.

The suspension was revised using Bilstein shock absorbers and later 911 Turbo tie rods, and the brakes were upgraded with front discs and a new master cylinder. A new oil tank and oil cooler were also fitted. All wear items such as bushes, bearings and seals were also renewed during the exhaustive ‘Outlaw’ customisation.

Accompanying the car is extensive documentation pertaining to its restoration and conversion at Provost Porsche, with invoices for parts and labour, not to mention more than 200 photographs to show the works being carried out.

This Porsche 3.2 Outlaw is an impressive custom build, resulting in a wonderfully characterful and exciting classic sports car. The added performance of the later engine gives this Porsche a much improved turn of pace, while the detailed rebuild means that the car is in superb cosmetic and mechanical order throughout. A great lightweight classic for high days and holidays, this ‘Outlaw’ coupe will no doubt surprise and delight its next owner in equal measure.
