1969 LAND ROVER SERIES IIA 109" HARD TOP

This Land Rover Series IIa 109 Hard Top is a highly original classic 4x4, which has seen long service with the NHS South East Coast Ambulance Service. Under the bonnet is a 2.5-litre engine, coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer indicates 70,302 miles.

First registered in February 1969, this Land Rover was delivered from the factory to the NHS, and its sole registered keeper has been the South East Coast Ambulance Service. It is understood to have been kitted out as an off-road ambulance, and is also equipped with a tow ball at the rear and a snow plough attachment for the front.

Today, it remains in unrestored original condition, and is assumed to wear the same white paintwork in which it left the factory more than 50 years ago. As you would expect, the finish has chipped and flaked away in places, but there does not appear to be any previous accident damage to any of the body panels. There is rust showing in various places, so of course it would now benefit from some cosmetic attention. Its original features give it a truly charming appearance, so it would also be a great candidate to repair where necessary, but preserve where possible.

In the cabin, the hard-wearing black vinyl upholstery has aged and split in places, but is still eminently usable. The simple dashboard is enhanced by a row of additional switches for the fog lights, orange beacon light on the roof, reversing lights, and interior lights. Its two main Jaeger instrument gauges appear to be original and are both in working order. At the rear, the load bay floor is coated in rust, so would benefit from replacement. There are storage lockers on either side, and some evidence of its previous fit-out to carry injured persons.

There is no documented service history, public services are typically very well maintained. This Land Rover also benefits from recent MOT tests that help to evidence its mechanical condition. While much of the engine bay may be entirely original, it is clear that the exhaust is a more recent replacement given its appearance.

Though it is understood to be exempt from mandatory annual testing on the basis of age, the most recent MOT test was on 12 March 2019 at 70,147 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with advisories noting slight play in the offside wheel bearings, and various small oil leaks.

This Land Rover Series IIa 109 Hard Top is a fair example of an iconic classic which has been registered to an NHS ambulance service from new, and which has evidently been used as intended. It would make a great project for someone who wishes to preserve the originality as much as possible, but could equally be repurposed as a 4x4 camper or adventure vehicle with a more significant investment in its restoration.
