1969 LANCIA FULVIA 1.6 HF FANALONE

This 1969 Lancia Fulvia 1.6 HF ‘Fanalone’ is a characterful historic race and rally car, which has been prepared to an excellent standard and is eligible for a number of high-profile events with current HTP paperwork. It is powered by a 1.6-litre V4, which drives the front wheels via the engaging four-speed close-ratio manual transmission. The odometer shows 94,831 miles.

Named for their large inner headlights, only 1,258 ‘Fanalone’ Fulvia 1.6 HFs are thought to have been built, with 20 examples raced in period by the Lancia works rally team. First registered on 31 December 1969, this original right-hand drive Fulvia’s log book lists just four prior keepers.

Beginning life as a standard road car, it remained with its first owner until 1999, and was then acquired by politician and racer Maxwell Aitken, 3rd Baron Beaverbrook, who drove it in the 1999 Le Centenaire Tour Auto with Gregor Fisken, before selling it to its next owner in 2008. He had the car shipped to Australia, though it does not appear to have ever been officially exported. The seller then acquired the car in June 2017 and had it brought back to the UK, where it has been subject of notable maintenance and refurbishment at Lancia specialist Thornley Kelham.

Today, the bodywork presents very well, and is not believed to have suffered from any previous accident damage. Adorned with white roundels and a matt black bonnet, the resprayed red paintwork evokes the look of the 1972 Monte Carlo Rally-winning car driven by Sandro Minari and Mario Mannucci, and is in good condition, with only a few small cracks in the finish, and some micro blisters on its surface. The car rides on a set of 14-inch bronze-painted Cromodora wheels, which are in great shape, having been refurbished between 2018 and 2019.

In the pared-back cabin, this sporting Lancia has been fitted with a pair of brand-new Corbeau racing seats with red four-point Schroth harnesses and a full roll cage. Ahead, an Alcantara-trimmed Momo steering wheel provides ample control over this agile rally machine; while the driver and passenger footwells are covered in rugged diamond-plate aluminium panels, and the door cards have been replaced with sheet metal items.

All of the required safety items, including a kill-switch and activation button for the plumbed-in fire extinguisher system are also present, and there are no faults with any of the controls, switches or electrical items.

This Fulvia’s most recent routine maintenance was a standard service, which was carried out in September 2019 at 94,000 miles by marque specialist Thornley Kelham, which also carried out general renovation work between 2018 and 2019. This included a general engine service, replacement of the spark plugs and fluids, plus the installation of a full fire extinguisher system and the fitment of the Corbeau seats mentioned above.

Although it is exempt due to its age, the car’s last MOT test was conducted on 18 October 2019 at 94,259 miles, resulting in a clean pass after the nearside front headlamp’s aim was adjusted, the horn was repaired, and the rear brakes were tended to.

All four wheels are fitted with Dunlop Direzza DZ03G track and competition tyres, which the seller describes as being in very good condition and with 3-4mm of tread remaining.

The car will be accompanied by invoices for services and maintenance from 2017, its Automobile Club d’Italia homologation papers, and its FIA Historical Technical Passport for racing and rally class GTS20 – which is valid until 21 December 2029.

Benefitting from recent refurbishment and well-prepared for road and rally use, this genuine Lancia Fulvia 1.6 HF ‘Fanalone’ has been driven as intended, and is ready for many more miles in the hands of its next owner. Eligible for FIA-sanctioned competition, it represents the opportunity to enter into a number of prestigious events, including the Tour Auto and Modena Cento Ore, and is sure to prove a delightful and exciting classic from behind the wheel.
