1969 FIAT 500 JOLLY EVOCATION

This Fiat 500 Jolly Evocation is a cheerful and entertaining classic Italian run-around, which is fresh from a full restoration and conversion. Under the rear engine lid is a 499cc two-cylinder engine, which produces around 18bhp and drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer displays 87,011 km; however, the vendor notes that the car has only covered a handful of kilometres since its mechanical components were overhauled.

First registered in 1969, this characterful little Fiat started its life as a standard 500F ‘berlina’, and has recently been transformed into a replica of the famous ‘Jolly’ beach car. Manufactured in period by Ghia, the original 500 Jolly was commonly used as transport for the patrons of luxury hotels, ferrying guests from their substantial yachts to their accommodation, while making the most of the Mediterranean sun thanks to the vehicle’s lack of roof or doors.

Acquired by its current owner one year ago, this 500’s bodywork, interior and mechanical components have been extensively refurbished, with work completing in January 2021. The vendor states that the successful buyer will be able to select their preferred colour for its canopy roof, and a range of accessories could be fitted (at additional cost), including nautical ropes in place of the doors and a wicker suitcase as shown in the gallery.

Thanks to its full restoration, this diminutive open-top car’s bodywork is in excellent condition, with straight panels and no evidence of any damage. The bright blue finish is just as appealing, and is sure to turn heads whether the car is on display, at the beach, or nipping around town. The brightwork – including the door mirrors, headlamp bezels and bumpers – presents well, and has been polished to a high shine, and the light lenses are also in good order. This Jolly evocation rides on a set of 12-inch steel wheels, which have been painted in the same hue as the bodywork and are in great shape. All four feature the correct hub caps and are also fitted with white trims, which mimic the look of white wall tyres, completing this Fiat’s classic styling.

In the cabin, the seats are upholstered in clean white vinyl with vivid blue piping and upper sections, which provides a charming contrast with the body colour while also preventing heat from building up when the car is parked on bright summer days. Both of the front seats, the rear bench and the dashboard trim panel are embroidered with ‘Spiaggina’ script, which references the original Jolly’s alternative Italian name, while making its intended use as a beach buggy clear.

As well as its re-trimmed seats, this 500 has also been fitted with new black carpets and a replacement white steering wheel, which features some minor blemishes but is in very good condition overall. Entertainment is provided via a vintage-style Bluetooth stereo, which combines classic looks with modern connectivity. All of the car’s buttons, switches, and electrical items work without fault.

Fresh from a full restoration, this Fiat’s mechanical components are in excellent order, and the seller states that the engine is still running in. The four-speed manual transmission is also said to be in good health, and the brakes are in very good condition.

The car will be subjected to a roadworthiness test before it is handed over to its next owner. All four wheels are fitted with Debica tyres in size 135/80 R12, which are brand new and have ample tread remaining.

This Jolly recreation will be supplied with a valid Italian roadworthiness certificate, export documents and a copy of its registration certificate.

Created to take full advantage of the summer sun, the Fiat 500 Jolly Evocation is a wonderful tribute to a 1960s icon. Completed in January 2021 and finished to a high standard, this recreation has all the style and charm of the original cars, and will make an excellent addition to any collection, although it will be best enjoyed running to and from the beach with the wind in your hair and the sun overhead.
