1969 FIAT 500

This Fiat 500 is a superb example of the Sixties city car, benefiting from a recent mechanical restoration carried out in August 2018. Under the rear engine lid is a characterful 499cc two-cylinder engine, allied to a four-speed transmission delivering power to the rear wheels. The odometer reads 81,206 km (50,459 miles).

This European-market 500 has been in the hands of the current vendor for the past four years, during which time it has been comprehensively maintained and enjoyed.

The Cinquecento’s exterior remains in good condition, thanks to a respray in Light Blue carried out prior to the vendor’s ownership. The bodywork remains straight and smooth, with the canvas sunroof adhering tautly to the roof when closed.

A high number of original specification features remain, including its Magneti Marelli wiper arms, Carello lights and Fiat badging. The front and rear light lenses show minor signs of discolouration, but the glasswork remains in good condition.

Inside, the 500’s basic interior has aged well. A delightfully simple two-spoke steering wheel shows signs of patina, while contact points including the dashboard switchgear and gear knob are complete and free of damage. The vendor states that the electrics on the car remain in full working order.

The most recent service was carried out in June 2020 at 81,140 km (50,418 miles) by Project Lucky Racing in Mittelstetten, where a new Weber carburettor was also installed.

In August 2018, a considerable mechanical overhaul was undertaken by specialist Formula GT of Munich. Electrical components replaced included the battery, hazard lights and ignition switch, while extensive work was carried out to the braking system and interior - with a new brake master cylinder, brake shoes, handbrake Bowden cable and heating hoses all fitted. In addition, a new exhaust was fitted along with a clutch pressure plate, replacement gearbox mountings, steering rods and ends and fuel hoses.

As the car is registered in Germany, its most recent TÃœV inspection was carried out in January 2021, with no faults listed. Wearing Debica tyres all round, these remain in excellent order, having been fitted during the restoration process two years ago.

This 1969 Fiat 500 offers driving enjoyment and charm that is far greater than the sum of its parts, and it performs well thanks to the recent mechanical restoration. With its compact dimensions it would make for a fun city commuter in warmer months; not to mention a worthy addition to any classic car collection.
