1969 AUSTIN MINI COOPER MKII

KEY FACTS

• A superb example of the 1960s British automotive icon, which remains in very good order following a full restoration 20 years ago.
• Under the bonnet is a 998cc inline-four, driving the front wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with synchromesh.
• The car is remarkably period-correct in terms of specification and appearance, with many parts original to the car.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

• The car is fitted with the five-bolt bumper; brass dot headlamp rings, grille and surround; and with the correct steering wheel and gear shifter - all of which are original to the car.
• The wiper box and starter motor are both dated to 1969, and the dynamo is from 1970.
• This MkII still rides on the correct hydrolastic suspension and is still on positive earth.
• While the car was fully restored 20 years ago, care was taken to preserve as much originality as possible.
• Its engine remains on the standard bore with D-top pistons, has the correct block with tappet chest covers, and has a solid wall fuel pump blank as it runs an electric pump mounted to the rear subframe.
• The 12G295 cylinder head has been converted to run on unleaded fuel, and has recently been off for a de-coking process. It is running the original SU HS2 carburettors and black air box.
• The engine is coupled to a four-speed synchromesh 22G1128 remote transmission.

CONDITION

• There is no known prior bodywork damage.
• The vendor reports that the car is very solid with no signs of rust, though given the time since the restoration he suggests it may benefit from a protective underbody coating to ensure it remains in excellent condition.
• The paintwork is described as being in good order, though there is a slight element of ‘orange peel’ in places. However, testing an area with 2000-grit wet and dry and compound polish reportedly brought it back to a perfect appearance.
• Its interior is believed to be original, with black vinyl and black carpeting as denoted on the heritage certificate. The upholstery is in excellent condition for its age, with no damage and only modest signs of use.
• There are no known electrical faults.
• The most recent MOT test was on 9 March 2021 at 84,401 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories. The car has only covered around 1,000 miles in the last 15 years, but has never had a single advisory or warning in that period.

SERVICE HISTORY

• Last serviced in April 2021, this was a service and carburettor tune-up carried out by A-series engine specialist, Crafted Classics Tuning.
• Accompanying the car is a raft of paperwork and receipts for work through the years, as shown in the gallery.

SUMMARY

Described by the vendor as “one of the most honest, genuine MkII Coopers you will find”, this Austin Mini is a fantastic example of the breed benefiting from a prior restoration. It is reported to drive very well with a strong engine, and like any well-sorted classic Mini it is great fun from behind the wheel. This would make a fine addition to any collection, and is certain to delight its next owner.
