1968 FORD MUSTANG GT 390 HARDTOP

This 1968 Ford Mustang GT is a fully restored example of an iconic American coupe that is the genesis point of the ‘pony car’ class. It is powered by a 390ci (6.4-litre) four-barrel FE V8, driven through a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer indicates 48,013 miles, which is unwarranted but may be correct.

The data plate on the car confirms the factory engine and gearbox specifications above, and that it was manufactured at the San Jose, California factory in February 1968. Little is known about the car’s history prior to its arrival in the UK, as the current owner purchased it as a totally restored example from the US last year.

Its paintwork is in outstanding condition, having been recently resprayed in a period-perfect cream colour, complete with a pair of matt black stripes running all the way along the top of the body. The only note from the vendor is that there is a minor paint defect at the rear of the A-pillar post.

The exterior trim around the car presents superbly, with polished chrome, undamaged light lenses and impressive shut lines. It sits on a set of 14-inch Torq Thrust wheels by American Racing, with a matt grey finish to the spokes, all of which are in very good order.

In the cabin, the seating has been fully retrimmed in black vinyl, in the original factory style pattern with ribbed centre panels. The lower dashboard section is painted to match the body colour, while ahead of the driver is a three-spoke Shelby style steering wheel trimmed in black leather, and a gear lever that has been finished with an ‘8 Ball’ knob. The dual-cowl dashboard is in superb condition, as is the brightwork around the instrument dials.

There is no service history with the car, but it was acquired in 2018 as a freshly-restored example with a fully rebuilt engine and transmission, and as such remains in top mechanical condition today.

Its first MOT test was in March 2018 at 46,681 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories. A fresh 12-month certificate will come with the car in the event of a successful auction.

The wheels are shod in a set of Mastercraft Avenger GT tyres in size 225/70 R14 all round, which each have approximately 6mm of tread remaining.

This Ford Mustang GT 390 Hardtop is a superb example of a classic that has remained as popular as ever with the passing of time. Not only is it presented in top-notch restored condition, but this car also benefits from the high-performance 325hp 390ci engine, meaning it is as enjoyable to drive as it is to look at.
