1968 FORD MUSTANG 289 HARDTOP

This 1968 Ford Mustang is a superb example of a first-generation model, presented in a striking Candy Apple Red finish and benefitting from a comprehensive restoration. This hardtop model is fitted with the robust 289 cubic inch (4.7-litre) V8 engine, coupled with a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 38,395 miles.

First registered in January 1968, this Ford is a ‘black plate’ California car, which was acquired from 28-year family ownership by a leading Mustang specialist in 2018, and shipped to the UK. The vehicle has undergone a thorough restoration and rebuild of the engine, which had revealed it to be a straight and solid example from the Golden State.

More recently, the car was fully prepared for an endurance road trip across India by Pilgrim Motorsports – though the adventure was cancelled after the work had been carried out due to the coronavirus pandemic. This included a range of performance and durability upgrades, with fitment of MSD electronic ignition, as well as a limited-slip differential, upgraded cooling system, dashboard switch-adjustable twin fuel pumps, heat-protected fuel pipes, electronic power steering, an under-bonnet Monte-Carlo brace and a bespoke fabricated fuel tank and sump guard.

The bodywork of this Mustang presents in excellent order, with flush shut lines and smooth panels. Its restoration in 2018 included a full bare-metal repaint, as well as refurbishments to the exterior trim. This example is finished in Candy Apple Red paintwork, which presents with only minor blemishes from use since the restoration, but is described by the vendor as being in very good condition overall. The vendor notes the car was fitted with durable steel wheels and heavy duty tyres prior to the planned trip to India, with two spares provided.

The cabin was also rejuvenated two years ago, and now presents in near-new condition with minimal wear. Re-trimmed in a plush red vinyl, the finish across the seats and door cards is superb, and the dark red carpets are also in great shape. Key contact points like the Hurst shifter and gear knob, and wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, are in excellent condition, as are the dashboard switches and other trim. A bespoke centre console has been installed to accommodate the fuel pump controls, extra gauges, and USB and 12-volt power sockets.

The last service was undertaken in 2019 at 38,000 miles, where the engine oil, filters and consumables were replaced. This Mustang is exempt from annual MOT testing due to its age, with the last test taking place on 8 August 2018 at 37,390 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories. The vehicle rides on BF Goodrich Radial T/A tyres all round.

This Ford Mustang 289 Hardtop is a restored and upgraded example of the iconic first-generation model, which is presented in superb condition. Benefitting from a thorough refurbishment completed two years ago, and significant investment in a raft of useful upgrades more recently, this Mustang is a strong and reliable classic muscle car. It would be ideal for an enthusiast looking for an example to use for rallies or endurance events, or someone who wants to take it on a road trip adventure.
