1967 VOLVO P1800S

This 1987 Volvo P1800S is a characterful classic coupe, presented in highly original condition and with a vibrant paint finish. It is powered by a 1.8-litre inline-four engine, coupled with a four-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. The odometer currently indicates 97,313 km.

First registered in January 1967, this Volvo is understood to have been delivered new to the US, and paperwork in the history files indicates that it always resided in California. It was imported to the UK and re-registered with the DVLA in May 2019 to the vendor. The car has resided in the enthusiast’s personal collection alongside the likes of a Lamborghini Countach, Urraco, and a Rolls-Royce Wraith.

The bodywork is in good shape, with flush shut lines and smooth panels, and areas such as the bottoms of the doors and the door jambs all appear clean and solid. The resprayed bright blue paintwork is presentable, though the vendor notes a small bubble can be seen on the bonnet, along with some chipped paint around the grille. Some of the rubber trims and seals would also benefit from renewal in places due to age. The car’s chrome bumpers, wing mirrors and window trims feature some notable spotting. It rides on a set of 15-inch wheels, with a few kerb marks and some light wear to the centre caps. They come wrapped with Vredestein tyres, which are in excellent condition.

Inside, the black leather trim appears to be entirely original, and a few small nicks can be seen around the stitching of the front seats, while the rears have suffered from some slight discolouration and sagging. The black finish on the steering wheel has started to flake, while some scratches can be seen on the dial faces, alongside blemishes on the surrounding switchgear and chrome trim. An aftermarket Sony stereo has been installed, and no electrical faults have been detected.

The last routine maintenance was undertaken in June 2020, where technicians at a local classic car specialist changed the engine oil, filter and spark plugs, before undertaking a vehicle health check. Accompanying the vehicle are the original owner’s manuals, an extensive history file from its time in California, and a tyre changing kit.

This Volvo P1800S is a lesser-seen classic coupe, which presents with an appealing blue finish, and retaining much of its original features. The model is arguably seeing something of a resurgence in popularity thanks partly to the new ‘restomods’ being produced by Cyan Racing. Though it is by no means a concours contender, this is a smart cruiser that could be treated to further improvement over time, or simply used as a stylish weekend driver as-is.
