1967 ASTON MARTIN DB6

This 1967 Aston Martin DB6 is an iconic British grand tourer, which has been restored to a very high standard and is presented in superb condition. On opening the front-hinged bonnet you are met by the 282bhp 4.0-litre DOHC straight-six, which is fed by three SU carburettors and drives the rear wheels via a Borg Warner three-speed automatic transmission. The odometer displays 8,864 miles; however this figure is not believed to be the accurate total.

An evolution of the famed Aston Martin DB5, the DB6 was announced at the London Motor Show in October 1965 and featured a number of distinct styling changes, including a ‘Kamm tail’ rear, split front and rear bumpers, and a higher roofline and longer wheelbase that increased its practicality.

In total, only 1,788 DB6s were manufactured during the model’s 1965 to 1971 production window. This original UK-market car was built on 17 October 1967, and was supplied to its first owner by dealer Rose & Young in Caterham, Surrey, on 10 November the same year.

In 1983, the car was acquired by an Italian lawyer, and subsequently spent many years in Rome, before being returned to the UK in 2015. It was put through an extensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration in 2016, at a total cost of more than £113,000.

Having been stripped back to bare metal, repaired and resprayed, the car’s bodywork presents superbly, and its Dawn Blue paintwork – a special order Rolls-Royce colour when new – is described by the vendor as being in excellent condition.

Fully refreshed and re-chromed, all of the exterior trim is in very good order, as are the window, door and light seals, which were also replaced when the bodywork was tended to. The car rides on a 15-inch set of chromed wire wheels, which are fitted with period-correct three-eared knock-off hub nuts.

In the cabin, this handsome classic looks every bit the refined tourer. Retrimmed in November 2015 by Moto-Trim, Aldershot, the interior has been returned to its former glory, with the seats upholstered in grey Connolly leather and with matching grey Wilton carpeting fitted throughout. The gauges and switchgear are in fantastic condition, as is the wood-rimmed steering wheel. All of the interior switches and electrical items work without fault, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.

In February 2016, an exhaustive mechanical overhaul was completed by Aston Martin specialist Pugsley & Lewis, Beckenham, at a total cost of £83,898.61. Essentially a full strip-down and rebuild, this saw almost every component of the car being tended to. To name just a few items, the engine’s timing chains, tensioners, mounts and gaskets were replaced, and the engine bay itself was tackled, with any corroded metal being removed and replaced.

The suspension system was also refurbished, and the nearside rear shock absorber was replaced, while the brake callipers were stripped and fitted with new seals. In addition, numerous perishable items were renewed, including the radiator hoses and battery, and the ignition timing was reset. A comprehensive, itemised rundown of the mechanical refurbishment is shown in the photo gallery.

Now exempt due to its age, this DB6’s last MOT test was conducted on 11 February 2016 at an indicated 8,651 miles, when it achieved a first-time pass with no advisories. However, it will regardless be sold with a fresh 12-month certificate for peace of mind. The wheels are fitted with a set of classic-style 215/70 VR15 Michelin XWX tyres, which are in good order and date to 2015.

Accompanying the car are a set of handbooks and a very good history file, as well as a fully-stocked tool roll and the correct jack. A British Motor Industry Heritage Trust factory record data sheet is also included, showing that the car has been refinished in its original specification, and also confirming that it is a numbers-matching example.

This Aston Martin DB6 is a luxurious and stylish British classic, which was designed to transport its occupants in comfort at a significant pace. Following a recent and comprehensive restoration, this example now presents in magnificent condition throughout, and would make a fine addition to any collection. It would no doubt prove to be a superb car for classic touring on the continent, and is ready to relish on the road.
