1966 VOLKSWAGEN T1 SPLITSCREEN CAMPERVAN

This 1966 Volkswagen T1 Splitscreen is a very smart example of the iconic bus, with an uprated engine and a custom campervan interior. It is powered by an upgraded 1.8-litre flat-four, fed by Dell’Orto carburettors, coupled with a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 18,790 miles, though this is not warranted.

Understood to have been first registered in early 1966, it was imported to the UK in recent years and was re-registered with the DVLA in June 2012. This VW has now been with its current keeper for two months, though the vehicle has been in the same family since 2014. Alongside an uprated engine, this camper has a bespoke interior, complete with a gas cooker, a rock-and-roll bed and custom upholstery, while the rear lights have been altered to meet European regulations.

The bodywork of this VW is in great shape, and the condition of its two-tone Cumulus White and Sea Blue finish has been described as excellent overall. The vendor has reported a few minor imperfections, such as a small blemish to the offside rear corner, some slight bubbling on the driver’s door and some age-related stone chips and scuffs. The vehicle rides on a set of 14-inch wheels, with some light scratches and marks to their white rims.

Inside, the blue vinyl upholstery is in superb order, with no damage to any of the main seat trim, and only some small scuffs on the lower half of the driver’s door card. The white dashboard and two-spoke steering wheel are both in great shape, and the VDO instruments are likely original. In the rear, the bespoke upholstery and units are all in excellent condition. The kitchen surfaces are in good order, though a few light marks can be seen on the gas cooker. The rear section also features a fridge, three-point plugs and a spacious storage compartment, plus the aforementioned rock-and-roll bed.

The last routine maintenance was undertaken in March 2019 at an indicated 17,752 miles by technicians at CP Garage Services in Dundee. Prior to this, similar routine maintenance was undertaken in March 2018 at 16,818 miles, and in March 2017 at 15,667 miles. During the vendor’s ownership, the brakes and kingpins have been rebuilt, while a new alternator, track rod, and steering box have also been installed.

The most recent MOT test was on 22 April 2021 at 18,794 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories or defects. The wheels are wrapped with Maxxis whitewall tyres, all with 5mm of tread remaining.

Accompanying the vehicle is an original owner’s manual, as well as a tool box, first aid kit and torch, along with various maintenance invoices and registration documents.
