1966 TRIUMPH TR4A

This 1966 Triumph TR4A is a beloved British sports car, which has been comprehensively restored and now presents in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition. Under the bonnet sits a rebuilt 2.1-litre inline-four engine, coupled with a reconditioned four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. The odometer currently indicates 1,769 miles, which is understood to be the mileage since the restoration work was completed in 2018/19.

This TR4A was first registered in Los Angeles, where it spent its life before being imported to the UK and re-registered with the DVLA in December 2018. It has since been stripped down to its bare chassis, before undergoing a comprehensive restoration and a conversion from left to right-hand-drive. The car is now powered by a replacement 2.1-litre engine, which has been rebuilt with a new 89mm piston and liner kit, road cam, cam followers and bearings. The bodywork now features a new ‘Surrey’ hard top from Honeybourne, alongside replacement bumpers and wire wheels, while the red leather interior has been completely renewed and re-trimmed.

The bodywork of this Triumph is all in excellent shape, having been rebuilt to an impressive standard. The resprayed white paintwork is excellent, and though the vendor has reported a few very light stone chips, these are only noticeable under close inspection and are commensurate with the car’s low mileage since restoration. The chrome grille, bumpers, wing mirrors and door handles are all in excellent condition, while the car rides on a set of new and pristine 15-inch wire wheels.

Inside, the new red leather upholstery and carpets are still fresh. The leather-clad door cards are also in excellent shape, and the wood veneers which accent the dashboard and three-spoke steering wheel rim are free of any blemishes. The chrome-trimmed dials all present as they should, and no electrical faults have been detected.

The vendor reports that the engine oil was changed in 2020 by the previous owner, though as the car has completed less than 2,000 miles since its restoration, this has been the only required maintenance.

The most recent MOT test was on 4 March 2021 at an indicated 1,725 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories or defects. The wheels are wrapped with Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres, which are in excellent condition.

Accompanying the vehicle is a heritage certificate issued by the British Motor Trust, alongside a detailed photographic record of the restoration process and a file containing all the invoices for the parts used in the restoration process (totalling over £20,000). A spare wheel, jack and hammer for the wire wheel knock-off spinners will also be supplied.

This Triumph TR4A is a very smart example of the popular roadster, which has undergone a complete nut-and-bolt restoration, alongside a conversion from left to right-hand-drive. Now powered by a rebuilt 2.1-litre engine and presented in pristine condition, this Triumph would make a charming classic addition to any garage.
