1966 MGB ROADSTER ABINGDON EDITION BY FRONTLINE DEVELOPMENTS

KEY FACTS

  • A bespoke, resto-mod take on the much-loved British classic, marrying 1960s design with modern sports car performance.
  • Under the bonnet is an all-alloy 2.5-litre four-cylinder Mazda engine. Equipped with a forged crankshaft, rods and pistons, and breathing through a set of 50mm throttle bodies, this produces 289bhp and 241lb-ft of torque, and drives the rear wheels via a Mazda six-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.
  • This, combined with the MGB’s lightweight construction, gives the Abingdon Edition a power-to-weight ratio of 311bhp per tonne, allowing it to sprint from 0-60mph in just 3.8 seconds.
  • Frontline Developments created only 25 Abingdon Edition cars, with this example being marked as number eight of that limited production run.
  • Commissioned by the seller for his wife, the car was built in 2016, and has been driven sparingly since, covering just 4,553 miles to date.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Created by classic MG specialist Frontline Developments, the limited production Abingdon Edition roadster was envisioned as the perfect marriage of classic British styling and modern-day performance.
  • In addition to its 2.5-litre Mazda engine, the car is equipped with aluminium front suspension uprights and tubular wishbones, adjustable coilover dampers and six-link rear suspension, while braking is handled by billet alloy four-pot callipers with ventilated discs at the front and cast alloy two-piston callipers at the rear.
  • What’s more, its comfort and usability have been enhanced with the addition of electric power steering, Dynamat sound-deadening and an air-conditioning system.
  • This example was built using an original 1966 MGB Roadster as a donor vehicle, which was then fully restored using hand-built panels from British Motor Heritage, which were meticulously checked to ensure the perfect fit and finish.
  • It was commissioned by the seller in the handsome hue of Old English White with St James Red Connolly leather upholstery and a matching red convertible hood.
  • The car will be accompanied by a file of documents which detail its maintenance following its rebuild in 2016.

CONDITION

  • Having been completely rebuilt using a new Heritage shell during the car’s construction, the bodywork is in great shape, with no damage whatsoever.
  • The Old English White paintwork is in excellent condition, and has a smooth and glossy appearance around the whole vehicle, with no noticeable marks or blemishes.
  • The brightwork, light lenses and other exterior trim items are similarly pristine, and the dark red convertible hood is in superb order, with no rips, tears or signs of fading.
  • Inside, the richly-trimmed cabin is very smart indeed, with only the slightest creases on the seats’ red leather upholstery, in line with the car’s limited use.
  • There are no known electrical or mechanical faults with the vehicle.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This MGB’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out by Ken Plant Autotech, who changed the engine oil, oil filter and spark plugs, as well as the coolant and one of the exhaust mountings.
  • Prior to this, the car was maintained by Frontline Developments following the build, at a total cost of nearly £3,500 over the course of three years.

SUMMARY

Described by Evo magazine’s Richard Meaden as “one of the most enjoyable and desirable cars I’ve driven all year” during its media launch, Frontline Developments’ MGB Roadster Abingdon Edition is a thrilling and beautifully built reimagining of the classic British sports car. One of only 25 examples built, this handsomely specified and very rare bespoke resto-mod is presented in superb condition throughout.
