1966 LAND ROVER SERIES IIA PICK UP AND TRAILER

KEY FACTS

• A rare genuine Series IIa Pick Up, thought to have been an MOD vehicle at some point, and presented in good running order.
• Under the bonnet sits its original 2.2-litre inline-four engine fed by a Weber carburettor, coupled with a four-speed manual transmission,
• Owned by the vendor for three-and-a-half years, there are only six previous keepers on the V5C.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

• This Series IIa is a lesser-seen Pick Up variant, and also comes with an aftermarket trailer made by J.Brockhouse and Co. thought to be from the 1950s.
• The presence of split wheels including the spare and wheels on the trailer, leather boots on swivel pins, front-mounted winch, lifting eyes, and convoy lights, leads the vendor to believe it was probably an MOD vehicle at some point.
• It is finished in the popular Bronze Green hue, with a sand coloured canvas soft top over the rear frame, and a similar colour tonneau cover for the trailer.
• Its inline-four engine is now fitted with a Weber carburettor, and oil pressure and coolant temperature gauges have also been installed.
• A factory-fitted winch and PTO are present and all working correctly, while there is a NATO style tow hitch at the rear.
• The cabin has an original leather-bound steering wheel, Smiths heater, and recent Exmoor Trim seats in black upholstery. The rear bench seats are also trimmed in black.
• It has been fitted with USB and 12-volt power sockets in the cabin, which run off a separate battery, though these can be easily removed if desired. A separate battery is also present to run the rear lights, comprising a period spot light at the back and a strip light in the loading bay.
• There are also vinyl covered door cards and storage nets, plus two period fire extinguishers, which are for show only.
• The Land Rover comes with the current V5C plus some prior MOT paperwork. The owner is a competent mechanic who has worked for roadside patrols and breakdown services, so has cared for this vehicle over the last few years.
• It will also come with a new oil filter, some gear stick rubber gaiters, the original crank handle stored behind seats, and an additional pressed steel number plate. There are also some sand ladders painted in the body colour.

CONDITION

• There is no known prior bodywork damage. Some slight corrosion on the bulkhead area has been treated and is solid, not spreading to other areas.
• Its Bronze Green paintwork is reported to be in fair condition. The front wings have some paint missing in places, and overall the finish has faded slightly over time and with exposure to the elements, in particular the cabin roof.
• The trailer has been stripped and restored, with a sandblasted, cleaned and repainted chassis in Bronze Green. All stainless steel nuts and bolts were used to secure the components, and rubber gasket tape was used between the unrestored buck and the chassis. It was fitted with new wiring and trailer plug to the lights, plus a new canvas cover with eyelets and bungees that was handmade by the vendor’s father, who is a professional vehicle trimmer.
• Inside, the replacement Exmoor Trim seats are in excellent condition, with minor signs of use but no significant wear.
• What little switchgear there is works as it should, though the vendor reports that the windscreen washer pump is not very strong.
• The most recent MOT test was on 7 February 2018 at 45,188 miles, which was a first-time pass with one advisory regarding a minor oil leak. The vehicle is exempt from mandatory MOT testing on the basis of age.
• The vendor reports that the Land Rover starts, runs, drives and stops very well for a 55-year-old car. The PTO and the winch are working correctly, as is the four-wheel drive system and the high/low-range selectors.

SERVICE HISTORY

• The last service was an oil and filter change down by the vendor, and the car has covered very few miles since then.
• Within the last few years, it has also received a new brake master cylinder, and a new-old-stock fuel pump and pipes from Land Rover specialist Bearmach. All three batteries are less than two years old and are regularly charged.

SUMMARY

This Land Rover Series IIa is a charming classic 4x4, which is fundamentally solid and very original but presents with an unashamed ‘shabby chic’ appearance. Believed to have been used as an MOD vehicle in the past, and fitted with associated upgrades and special equipment, it also comes with a smart trailer to give it even more practicality. Still on its original chassis, it has true patina and character, and always draws attention wherever it goes. With the vendor stating that it is a fine runner, this would make a great weekend cruiser or a fun show car.
