1965 MG MIDGET MK2

This MG Midget is a very smart example of the second-generation car, benefitting from numerous upgrades over the Mk1 model, as well as an improved engine. Equipped with a 1.1-litre inline-four engine, the Midget Mk2 was endowed with around 59hp, with power going to the rear wheels via the four-speed manual transmission. Understood to have had just one private owner for the first 50 years of its life, and having been looked after by their wife for the last five years, this car’s odometer indicates 54,194 miles.

Registered on 6 May 1965, this example was built during the last full year of Mk2 production. The Midget was kept garaged throughout its lifetime by a single owner for the first five decades of its life. After they passed away in 2016, the car passed to their wife, who kept the car stored, but regularly started it and brought the engine up to temperature. It is now offered for sale by the trade.

Thanks to its well-sheltered life in a warm, dry garage, the original paintwork on this Midget still shines beautifully, with a wonderful patina, and no major damage or dents. There are however some minor light marks on the upper offside rear wing, which can be seen above the chrome strips in the photographs. The chromework - which is also believed to be original - is also beginning to show slight signs of age-related wear, but on a wholly original car like this that is entirely forgiveable.

Inside, the car retains its factory finishes, and presents in excellent condition given its age. The seats are beginning to show some signs of wear but are free from rips and tears, while the carpet around the transmission tunnel is beginning to fray at the rear, but is still in very good condition. The door card on the passenger side has a minor mark below the opening handle, but otherwise presents well. In the boot, there are no signs of corrosion or water ingress, and the spare wheel and basic toolkit are also present. The foldable soft top and its frame are both in good order, with no reported leaks or visible damage. Everything inside the cabin works as it should, with no known electrical faults or warning lights.

It is clear that this Midget has been well-cared for, with an extensive history file detailing various work that has been carried out over the years. The engine bay presents very well indeed, with a bright chrome finish to the air filters and a clean block. Last serviced by Denyer Classic Cars of Chobham, Surrey during March 2021, the oil and filter were changed, but no other work was noted as being required.

The most recent MOT test was carried out on 8 March 2021, and the result was a clean pass with no advisory items. Prior to this, there are MOT certificates dating back to 1992 with the car. Fitted with four matching tyres in excellent condition, this Midget is ready for its next owner to cherish and enjoy it, just in time for summer.

Cars of this era that have been in single husband-and-wife ownership from new do not come to market very often, let alone ones that remain in such good order. This MG Midget therefore represents an unmissable opportunity for a classic sports car enthusiast to get their hands on a Midget Mk2 in excellent original condition, with unbeatable provenance. From the beautiful paintwork to the superb interior, this MG will no doubt be a delight to own and cherish.
