1965 JAGUAR E-TYPE SERIES 1 4.2 FHC

KEY FACTS

  • A superb restored example of the classic sporting coupe, which has been uprated to rally specification by Jason Len, president of XKs Motorsport in California.
  • It is powered by a fully rebuilt and enhanced 4.2-litre straight-six, now running around 300bhp, coupled to a four-speed manual transmission.
  • It has benefited from a recent specialist overhaul at CKL Developments in Battle.
  • An original US-market car, in recent years it was offered by well-known dealer Fantasy Junction. The car was imported to the UK and re-registered in August 2018.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • The refurbishment and improvement of this E-Type began with a full bare-metal restoration carried out between 2009 and 2011 by Muncie Imports, at a cost of around $107,000. A few years later, it was treated to further detailing and ‘perfecting’ at an additional cost of some $20,000. The car was displayed at the Palos Verdes Concours d'Elegance, Rodeo Drive Concours, and the 2015 Quail Motorsports Gathering in Monterey.
  • Originally specified with Pale Primrose paintwork, this Jaguar now sports the attractive British Racing Green hue.
  • It rides on silver painted competition specification wire wheels, shod in a brand-new set of tyres, which were fitted at CKL Developments in March 2020.
  • Its 4.2-litre straight-six, upgraded by XKs Motorsport, is equipped with forged high-compression pistons, a big-valve cylinder head, high-performance cams and exhaust headers, an alloy HD radiator, a HD cooling fan, triple Weber 40 DCOE carburettors and electronic ignition, with power reportedly up 10-15% over a standard 4.2 FHC.
  • The car is also now fitted with EZ power steering.
  • Inside, the cabin is equipped with aluminium dashboard trim in the style of an early 3.8-litre car, air-conditioning and vintage rally clocks. The dashboard itself was fully restored during the refurbishment programme, including the instruments, switches, and dash pad. The car also has an MP3 player and phone charger in the arm rest compartment.
  • It is accompanied by its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, confirming the engine is numbers-matching, along with the tool roll, numerous maintenance invoices, a photographic record of the restoration process and a matching spare wheel.
  • The car also comes with a FIVA Identity Card, which remains valid until September 2025.

CONDITION

  • Its resprayed British Racing Green paintwork is in very good condition, with minor stone chips from use following its restoration. A couple of very small scratches are also visible around the door handles.
  • Inside, its black leather upholstery presents with just a few age-related creases, but overall is in superb order.
  • No electrical faults have been detected.
  • The most recent MOT test was on 1 May 2020 at 37,457 miles, which was a clean pass with no advisories or defects.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • In February 2020, technicians at renowned classic Jaguar specialist CKL Developments in East Sussex performed a mechanical overhaul and fettling, comprising a gearbox service, replacement of the right-side hub bearing in the rear axle, a steering rack overhaul, and geometry revisions.
  • With its carburettors swapped to a triple Weber setup, CKL also carried out a rolling road setup and tuning session.
  • Its differential has also been rebuilt, and a wide-bore Hayward & Scott exhaust system has been installed.
  • Prior to this, in July 2017, the driveshaft was repaired, while the cylinder head and carburettors were rebuilt at XKs Motorsport in California, at a cost of $19,327.
